Bent back gear shift... should I be concerned?
I wrecked my bike back in November (I was very, very stupid and quite lucky to only sprain an ankle) and it's beginning to get warm enough to get the bike back in fighting shape.
I ordered a used fairing for replacement and will need to find another flush turn signal that matches the other side (I like the style). I'm on the fence about trying to straighten out the gear shift or to by a new one, mainly because the end is so sheared off and the rubber so worn I'm worried it's gonna be tough on my shoes and wear a hole in it. Anyway, my main concern is that after the wreck, the gear shift was bent all the way back, pointing towards the rear seat. As you can see, I was able to get back in it's normal position. However, because it's bent towards the center of the bike, I can't shift it down, because it hits the bar connected to it. I suspect that once it's straightened out -- or if I get a new one -- that I'll be fine because it will have free movement like usual. Right now, I can get it either 1st or 2nd (I think it's 1st) and neutral. Of course, it also gets stuck in neutral, and I have to do some wiggling to get it to click in gear, because it has little movement. It can be lifted up -- with some effort -- but not down, because it hits the bar. Should I be concerned about the transmission, since the wreck originally bent it back so far? |

Transmission should be OK.
Disassemble the thing, clamp it on a bench and straight it up to its original shape.

oh dang strike what I said in your other thread... fixing that fairing would be to much work, see if you can just get a replacement...

Yeah, I found one on ebay that is used. It has some scratches, but that's about it. Plus, it was 150 bucks, instead of 300+ for a new one.

Same thing happened to my shifter when I went down on my bike. Just take it apart and straighten it in a bench vise. That is what I did. The little connecting rod thing was bent way out of shape and I managed to straighten it out as well.
The transmission should be alright. Mine was fine after my shifter got bent way back as well. Goodluck! |

As mentioned, transmission should be fine. When I went down, mine twisted all the way back. Think of pulling up to shift, except keep pulling (though you can't) until it's 180 degrees from where it should be. I have no idea how, but it happened. I've put a few thousand miles since, and the transmission has been fine. Shifts fine, etc etc. I do have a minor oil leak, which I'm thinking is from a torn seal around the shifting shaft. It doesn't leak onto the floor, and my oil hasn't been changed and maintains the same level for the past 4k miles. Having been said, a bent shifter is the most of your worries.

I once hit a traffic cone on the freeway... my rear brake lever was bent into a horseshoe. same with the shift linkage, just bent back into shape and all is well. The paint peeled up and where the metal is exposed expect some rust, but it will only be a cosmetic thing.
also, if you have green or black, this has been the cheapest place for fairings. - http://www.tygausa.com/en/23-ninja-250r-2008-2010 |

The most concerning part of your post is where you say that you are lucky to only have a sprained ankle and I honestly am glad that is all the damage done to you, but you are worried about the shifter wearing through and messing up your SHOES. If it were me and a part of my body was hurt in an accident I would be looking to protect that part of my body. Get some boots keep your feet safe.
