Stands

I recently received a set of DMP S-Spec stands from my father for my birthday. I got a Front forklift and rear spool lift set.

Both Motorcyclegear.com and Motorcycle-Superstore.com say that the 2010 250R should be using a 19mm pin. I tried as best as I could but the 19MM pin doesn't fit in my forks. The 18mm is a nice snug fit with no movement. The 19MM had to be bought separately while the 18MM was included with the front stand.

Has anybody else found that the forks don't take a 19mm pin like the online charts say they should or did I get the only 250R with a smaller pin hole in my front triple tree?

I'm using a much smaller pin with no issues. My ZX-10R uses the #2 pin (pitbull), and when I got the 250, it lifted it up just fine with that #2 pin and held it securely. I just measured it, and the pin is close to 9/16", or 14.3mm or so. It's not a snug fit, so the official sizing is probably a bit larger. Pitbull says that the new-gen 250's should take a #1 pin, but I can't find any conversion chart from that to mm.

OK, according to this post, here is the sizing for the #1 pin:

Quote:
Total length 80mm
Length of tapered end that goes in the bottom of the triple 40mm
Diameter at base 19mm
Diameter that goes in triple 17.68mm
It doesn't sound like one that is 19mm all the way up and down would work.

OK.

I agree that there's no way a 19mm pin would fit.

It's just that both websites say it should and the 19mm pin has to be purchased separately from the stand. If those charts are wrong I'm going to send an e-mail to both to let them know about it so they can change them.

I'm not all that concerned about a return since the spare pin only cost me $5. It would likely cost me most of that $5 refund to ship it back.

I was researching this a few days ago and found a chart for one brand that clearly stated 18mm for 2008+ and 19mm for the previous generation. I thought they were just using sloppy measurements and that 19mm would be fine when I saw that 19mm was listed for both generations on other charts.

I e-mailed MotorcycleGear.com last night about it. They sent a message to DMP about the pin not fitting correctly.

They responded with:

"We haven’t had any issues since the last time the pin was checked on that application. We will put a note in our system to re-check the pin size next time we have that bike in our shop. From what I show your chart is correct."

I think the charts are wrong and they may have assumed that the 88-07 and 08-12 bikes had the same size pin. There's no way the 19mm pin they sent me would fit.

I'm going to take them to work with me today and measure them to see just how close they are to the advertised dimensions.

EDIT:

Nate from Motorcyclegear.com just e-mailed me to say that they are going to just refund the cost of the pin. I get to keep the pin as well.

They have just bought me as a customer forever. I've never seen customer service respond this rapidly to a problem.

I just measured both pins and the hole in the lower triple tree.

18mm pin: 17.90mm
19mm pin: 18.85mm
Lower triple hole: 18.35mm

The 19mm pin they say is needed is a half a millimeter too large to fit in the hole.

Thanks, I was wondering what size it was too. I'm probably going to have a machine shop make me a pin for my Lockhart Phillips front stand since I'm having a hard time finding a place that sells replacement pins.

If you do this, please make me one! Would you make it with a cut out to fit a rubber O-ring like the original? Their catalog says that replacement pins are $25 but I just paid $60 for the used stand and that would put me over the cost of a new stand on their website.

Just thought I'd add that I work in a machine shop.

Not sure if they'd let me use a lathe on a Sunday but I could ask.

I have the Lockhart Phillips stand with the 19MM pin which does not fit as mentioned.

Just for reference:

Lockhart Phillips front triple stand pins sizes are 13MM, 16MM, 19MM, 22MM and 27MM.

The measurements for the 19MM are:
63MM total length
25MM head length
19MM head diameter
16MM base diameter
~19MM from base is where the o-ring sits which is about midway from the base to the lower portion of the head of the pin.

I measured the lower triple hole and came up with ~18.4MM

Now I just got a find a machine shop to make a few.

That'd be awesome. I wonder if making it 17mm would be close enough to fit well as well as fit a few more bikes or if making it 18mm is the best way.

Thumbs up

Yes, I have made a pin that fits

@CZroe
@Gorilla25

To get one, head to your tool box and pull out a 12mm 2.5" deep 3/8th" socket. If you can't find one, head to your local hardware store and buy one. This socket is from my Great Neck (Autozone) tool box. The size may vary between brands.

Lockhart Phillips does not make a pin that fits the 250 lower triple perfectly. The 16mm pin will fit but will have a little wobble to it.

You will need to put a rag on top of your front fender to prevent the stand from scratching it up.

This is probably the most I've ever contributed to the Ninjette Tech thread

FWIW, the OP refers to the triple-tree/head stand as a "fork stand" when that is the other kind that lifts it by the forks without a pin.
