Question Target Fixation

Yep says it all... There I was riding in a group having fun when all the sudden there was a Person in a chicken suit jumping up and down and holding a sign.. and well I started fixating on the da*n sign.. luckily I caught myself about an inch from oh sh*tville. So my question is does anyone else have issues with target fixation? And how do you snap out of it? I am sure it less often is chicken suit and more than likely a corner but still, lol!

Hmmm Interesting. I have ADHD so a lot of things catch my attention and sometimes it's a strugle to stay focused but that's about the only issues I have that sort of diagnosis :P

Yes I as well have a hard time focusing. But in all the time I've been riding, front seat and back I have never been like I was Wednesday night..

I just watch brake lights of the people in front of me, and at least try to keep them in my peripheral vision.

its reflex. try practicing manipulating the bars consciously while looking somewhere else. it will help you separate your hands from your head.

Jillian,

We are all wired to be curious and to fix our attention in dangerous situations.

Since that is a natural instinct, training is required to do the opposite.

Twist of the Wrist II has a chapter dedicated to explain how to better train for riding using only a broader sight and peripheral view.

In my case, it took surviving several close calls to learn not to be distracted from efficiently using my best riding tool: my eyes.

I have a terrible habit of target fixating, especially when I feel that I'm near my limit and even when I'm focusing (or trying to). For example, during some changing radii turns, I almost went into the ditch because I was staring directly at it. In hindsight, I noticed that I was so tense. Even when I was consciously working on my technique (leans, body position, and looking where I wanted to go), my instinct got the better of me.

@alex.s - I never though of that. I'm definitely going to practice that the next time I ride.

PS: Chicken Suit Man was such a cooler story, now that I'm reading this again...

Read this thread I started a couple of years ago that I called Mental Target Fixation. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=57175 Is this what the OP is talking about?

I think this discussion is slightly different than regular target fixation as I know it - Not looking where you want to go vs. going to what you are staring at.... ditch, guard rail, etc.
