Headlight dims when brake lights come on.
I have a 2004 ninja 250, I noticed that the headlight dims when the brake lights come on. Is this a sign the stator is going bad or is this normal for these bikes?

that's normal behavior for a Pre-Gen when the engine is running at idle, the bike's electrical system just doesn't produce that much power.

Are there any upgraded stators or rectifiers? Or is the 08-12 stators any better?

I replaced all of my 2005 EX250's lighting with LED bulbs. I replaced the headlight, the brake lights, the turn signals and even the instrument panel back-lighting.
Doing an LED light swap requires you to do a couple of things beyond just swapping out all of the light bulbs. You have to purchase and install an LED-compatible turn signal blinker control relay (I bought mine from SuperBright LEDs, they sell a plug-n-play relay that plugs right into the EX250's wiring harness). And you have to install a diode (a one-way only electrical blocker) on each of the lines that lead to the turn signal indicators on the instrument panel. You can do any of the lights or all of them. If you only do the brake lights that's usually enough to greatly reduce the headlight dimming effect. Remember that each of the brake lights is actually 2 lights (filaments) inside each bulb, one filament is the always-on "running light" and the other filament is the high-draw extra-bright brake light. |

So far I'm pleased with the LED headlight, it's such a good replacement I forget it's LED. I haven't taken any pics of it but when I swapped to the LED I remember noticing that I liked the spread of the beam better that the original bulb.

I'd appreciate if you would provide a list of the bulbs you ordered from superbrightleds. I'm planning to do the same, but wasn't sure what to look for.
Thanks in advance! |
