Fodsports el cheapo gps(ali)
as you all know, i try to bring the cheapest items i can find to share with my comrades. el cheapo always tries to find the lowest of lows. i picked this gps up for $96.91 with a $2 coupon. have you priced dedicated motorcycle gps? yup, it's a eye opener and not friendly on the wallet. when it arrives, i'll do a el cheapo work up on it. now ali express does paypal too!

I guess I don't need all features of Garmin. My wife bought me a TomTom One 10-years ago for birthday. It gives me map and tells me where to turn to get to my destination. Was about $60 back then. Still using it and looking at mounting it to steerer stem bolt on street bike.

yeah, phones don't work reliably as GPS. Depending upon the app, they'll use a combination of cellular data and GPS tracking. Problem is when you're in area with no cell service, the data link part is broken for app.
Found this out hard way when in back-woods of Oregon on logging roads with no cell service. Phone apps, kaput! Went back to TomTom with no problems. |

Copilot lets you download maps ahead of time. You don't need cell coverage at all after that, just GPS reception. I have maps downloaded for all of North America in my Samsung phone. It's a free app, unless you want the voice version, which is usually $5 or $10, depending of phase of the moon or something.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Here_(company) Android version IOS version Get the Here app, go to Download maps within the app, and choose the maps for however much space you want to use on the phone. Did I mention that all of this is free? But I still use motorcycle-specific GPS units on the bikes, for better screens that can be used with gloves, water protection, vibration, etc. My two main GPSs on the BMW are still a Zumo 550 purchased in 2006, and a BMW Navigator IV (clone of Garmin 660), purchased in 2012. Both of them are still fully functional, and just earlier in the week I updated both of them to the latest 2019.10 version of Garmin's full US maps. For the ninjette, I use a Garmin 60c from a million years ago, but it has been having some issues lately; I need to see if I can get an updated mapset into it and see why it may be shutting off from time to time. The Garmin GPSs are better than the phone apps for storing tracks, loading tracks, designing routes, adding multiple waypoints for a complicated motorcycle ride For simple use cases (enter in single address, and have the gadget tell you how to get there), the phone apps work fantasticallly well. And if there is cell service available, they can be tied in very well with real-time traffic information, that the off-line Garmin devices do not provide.

It lives! Was able to load latest 2019.10 maps on the Garmin GPS60Cx. If the basemap dates can be believed, it looks like I bought this gadget in 2001.

Yep, noting beats my $250 Zumo 660. it might be outdated, but bluetooth, traffic, offroad, twisty, loading 500 point tracks, it does it all. Plus, it can get wet.

Turns out I was exaggerating, but not by much. Found the purchase in Quicken - March 2006 for the 60Cx, April 2007 for the Zumo 550. So 12 years old, not 17. Still a good run, and still going!

i don't think so, no. It's a simple mapping application, analogous to google maps or apple maps - with the advantage that it can be completely self-contained with its entire mapset. It's not a full-featured gps track/route management app.

Google Maps allows you to make custom-maps on your desktop machine and their maps lab. Then save it as custom-map to your profile and pull it up with phone app.

Got it - I haven't played with the Google Maps features in quite a few years. Always created and distributed gpx files from MapSource, and now BaseCamp. I did always expect and hope that eventually Google would simplify the process. Most recent phone is completely waterproof even without a case, so it's the first time I'd consider mounting it directly in a sightline on the bike rather than hidden away. But it's still not going to be as easy to use with gloves on compared to the touchscreens that are made for that type of input.

it made it
order placed on 1/26 arrived 2/9. not bad
notice battery contacts when u mount device into its holder, you have a dedicated charging cable which can hook straight to battery. notice small thumbscrew, this allows you to screw mount to back of gps. uses igo primo navigation. do not try to update thru naviextra! it will not let you. i tried for 10 hours! i contacted fodsport and they say they will give me a update yearly. i responded by saying a note about this would be nice.

mount up!
now to find a suitable mounting spot. i prefer to leave my bark busters on which will put the clip on mount in jeopardy. i would like to put it behind windscreen but the only mount fastener close is the mirror bolt. anybody have any ideas?the bracket should allow quick removal via quick release pins.

I say remove the ball-joint plate and make bracket that bridges the two fairing bolts. Four holes on the bridge to attach holder. I really like that 2-piece design!

Like the price, like the size. I don't like that the cheaper gadgets like this appear to use non-standard connectors. That usb cable seems completely unique, not mini-USB, micro-USB, USC-C, or any other common format. If that's true, it means you need to hold on to that specific cable for dear life, as a replacement means dealing only with these guys, instead of Amazon or any random electronics store. We've run into the same issue before for cheaper gadgets that the kids have had as gifts (chargeable toys, watches, etc.).
Edit - maybe that is a mini-USB port, it looked a bit strange to me blown up to that size, but looking at some cables I have around here, it's possible that it is that standard, in which case I retract the comment!

Replaces a bolt with a ball, and you’re good to go. You might want to replace the existing ball on your GPS with a good Ram one. I mount my phone, GPS and mirrors with ram mounts.

Yep - if it's a mini-USB, that is an (older) standard. I didn't remember them having that rounded lip at the top, that isn't as visible to me. I always thought the mini-usb connector was more of a straight line on all 4 sides. Basically a bigger/squatter version of the micro-usb. The magnification and great quality of the pic confused me.

The problem I have found most of the gps system available can't be seen in direct sunlight including those crappy exploding Samsung phones.

That's one of the advantages of some of the motorcycle specific ones, they have screens that are intended to be used right in direct sunlight. Even my old 550 works fine in just about any sun conditions. Still though, some folks do arrange hoods to allow the screen to seem more usable in sun.

rider update * a bust*
machine shop fab fell thru and unable to make a mount behind visor because they use a smaller ball unlike rams 1" ball. my solution if i will be drill out rivit/screws(looks like socket head but it's not)and fab/mount a ram ball on to it. i already have the erector mounts for a ram x mount so it should be no problem. this gps is ancient compared to g maps or waze(my fav) it's also a bootleg version of navi system that cannot be updated by me. only by fodsport
that's what el cheapo is sometimes= crap.
