Or just keep them for the next go-around.... You're gonna have to buy this stuff again, eventually... Unless of course you kick the 250 to the curb and get something else....

Kick the 250 to the curb!? That is about as bad as a war crime... no, worse.

How nice, a CCP google add just popped up. I made sure they will be paying for the add..... not that I am holding any resentment or anything.

Update: I officially received a refund ($$ in account), through Amazon, from the first retailer for the Front rotor.

Now I'm waiting for EBC to resolve their end for the other parts, as promised. I trust they will, but may take a little longer, as I believe it is the UK end that is handling it. The email from them did indicate shipping TO the US. I am feeling more positive about giving them another chance, due to positive initial contact... although it was a pretty major defect.

I think I mentioned this earlier, but I have had the new OEM rotors on for almost 2 weeks, and they are working and wearing famously, with zero groves The Galfer black pads are now bedded, and I am feeling more confident in them... even though they aren't the old HH. I will, however, take the opportunity to compare rotor wear with the black pads, vs. the data collected from using my old HH pads. With the SS up front, the black pads should perform "close enough" to my old HH... that is my thought anyways.

spooh: I think I will take your advise about holding onto the new EBC parts for next time. Rotors are so expensive, that I never have the cash set aside, so even if I won't need it for a couple years, it will be nice to have the parts on hand (trusting the new EBC rotors work, since there shouldn't be a warranty still covering it when I get around to using it).

I received my rear rotor and pads. They look fantastic, none of the issue you described. So I'm guessing they're telling the truth by saying it was a small batch, although our sample size is pathetically small... Eh, whatcha gonna do...

Should I post the DIY for the rear-rotor replacement here, or start a new thread?

I would say here, but I burnt up a ton of space after the first one, and it would be pretty buried. My suggestion is to make a Wiki, and post a brief announcement of its addition.

I got my ebc's and compared them to my galfer. Did you notice that the EBC HH is much thicker than the galfer black?

I didn't get the HH pads, but I'll measure mine and throw it up so we can compare...

I'll have to check my pile of old parts when I get home. It wasn't obvious to me when I wasn't looking for it, or thinking about it. In fact, I had actually forgotten the galfer are supposed to have thinner backs, until someone mentioned it.

I had a package waiting for me when I got home today.... it wasn't what I was expecting either. First off, EBC promised me more than I was expecting, or asking for. I was upfront with them about having the front replaced by one of the retailers, and thus only asking them to make good on the rear, but they wanted to do front & rear... and the pads (I did ask for the pads). It didn't blow my socks off, but I was very happy/satisfied with their offer. I thought it was more than fair.

So I opened the package, and noticed they changed the box.... then I noticed why the box was different. At first I thought they may have sent me the wrong rotor (doh!), but no, they totally UPGRADED me with the XC rotors... rock on! Then I keep pulling parts out of the box... they gave me TWO front XC rotors (MD4162 XC), one rear (MD4163C), and THREE HH pads! I'm guessing they were thinking the 250r had two brakes up front, but maybe they were just feeling extra generous. You will see in one picture below, that there are still some imperfections in the vent holes, but MUCH better than the first set.

My only dilemma now is what to do with them.... they look so pretty, and I want to put them on the bike, but I have just broken in my new OEM rotors and pads. It will be another 2.5 - 3yrs before I will even need them (a part of me is paranoid about finding out they are flawed in 3 yrs, when it is likely too late). I may never need to buy rotors for this bike again... awesome!

I didn't realize until today that the guy I was corresponding with was the CEO (iPhone signature had title). I sent him a 'Thank you' and told him I would say nice things here about the attention he gave me I'm not ready to give my recommendation yet, since I haven't gotten to try their [non-defective] products yet, but the service makes it much easier to risk trusting them again. I know there are others out there who have had bad experiences, but it will be interesting to see over the long haul, how these rotors perform for our bike. If they hold up, it could be very promising....

EDIT: He just wrote me back to say that all the new discs are like the XC series they sent me. I guess those killer prices we were getting were likely because they were closing them out. They sure do look nice though.

wow, that's cool and looks trick dude! If there's nothing wrong with them, you should be able to swap them onto your bike without fear of damaging the new brake pads....

The only reason i recommended you not use the old (new) banged-up pads is so they don't score the new (replacement) rotor... I hope you know what I mean by all that...

Not sure why you say this... The stock fronts aren't floating either, and they made those floating. Why couldn't they do the same for the back? Or you just referring to the fact that they didn't convert them to floating rotors?

Like I mentioned in my edit, he later told me they are switching to this style... but when I stop to think about it, I don't know why they would do that. It seems better to keep both designs, to capture the higher end fancy aftermarket crowd, and the close-to-OEM crowd. Maybe I misunderstood. Regardless, I couldn't even find the XC for the 250r when I placed my original order.... so who knows.

Unfortunately I have to revive this thread with an EBC update.

Yesterday I installed the new [replacement] EBC front rotor, and replacement EBC HH pads. This was supposed to fix the "metallurgy problem." All parts were inspected, cleaned, and installed by the book. The first thing I noticed during the install is that the mounting holes on the rotor are recessed, and unfortunately the the head of the OEM mounting bolts are too big for the recess (1.55 mm difference). I decided to continue anyways.

Riding out of my neighborhood felt OK, but when I stopped at the first light, I noticed the rotor was already showing wear. Back home I went. Sure enough, the rotor had started to score. It wasn't as bad as the first EBC set, and I was trying to stay hopeful, but the writing was on the wall.... here it is at approx. 2 miles:

And a little closer with a bit of metal embedded (either from the pad or rotor):

I wanted to see if it would get any better with a few more miles, so I took it to work today. I was VERY light on the brake, as they weren't bedded. For the most part it felt fine, but one or twice I felt something weird. Once I thought I felt grinding as I slowed to a stop (still less then the first messed up rotor), and another time like it grabbed and pulsed really hard (actually felt the lever move). It only did this a couple times.

When I got home I saw the rotors continued to score, and that it would just be unacceptable. Here is what it looked like after approx. 25 miles:

one nasty piece of metal:

And here are the brand new pads! They aren't even close to bedded, yet the Grand Canyon is carved into the back pad.

At this point I have COMPLETELY lost faith in EBC brakes/rotors. Once is an anomaly, again from another supplier is weird but possible, a third time with a completely new design is utterly unacceptable. I will again contact the President to update him, and ask for a refund. I'll post the results.

It kind sucks that I was potentially going to make money by selling the extras on ebay.... but I can't sell it now that I know it is bad.
