SPAM from Cycle Gear

Anybody else getting spammed? I get about 5-6 spams from them every day. I tried unsubscribing, but it didn't work. I had to blacklist cyclegear.com, but I noticed a ton of spam from them when I looked in my spam folder. This has been going on for over a year.

Hint: If you buy anything from cycle gear, DON'T give them your email address.

Don't you need to give them your email if you buy online?

who cares? CG is amazing. i bought a bilt suit from them to use during a track day before my kobe showed, returned it after i was done, and they gave me more back than i originally paid for it. they also hand out free wheel weights, or if you bring your wheel in they will balance it for free for you. talk about amazing service! now i go to CG first. if CG doesnt have what i need, i go to an online store.

you can literally return anything. with or without receipt. in pretty much any condition. they are all about customer service, and a certain newly hired CG employee tells me they really drill it into them from the start.

though i have no idea how their website is... just go into a store

Every morning when i wake up i check my phone and i have an email from them. It makes me feel happy because it feels like someone cares about me. If i don't get the email, i feel that there is something wrong. I am forever alone.

I don't get their spam. And I've bought/returned stuff quite a bit.

Well, for some reason they like me even more than the viagra peddlers.

They ask you for your email address in the store and I always say NULL@DEV.COM. But it was too late. They got my real email address from an online purchase.

That was last year when I purchased the set of tires that I just pulled off and replaced with new ones the other day. And they're still sending me spam. Or trying to. I blacklisted them so email from them goes automatically to the spam folder.

The stores are OK, but if you ever order online from them, I suggest a disposable email account.

+1 and highly recommended for pretty much all online purchases, even from supposed "reputable" retailers. I use a "dummy" email account for all my online purchases and I'm amazed at how much SPAM it receives per day. The other contributing factor is that you also sometimes receive spam from affiliate companies even when you did transact any business with them directly.

One of the common tricks of SPAM mail is that when they give you an option to unsubscribe and you choose to do so, that just confirms that there is a real live person checking that mail box. Subsequently, you end up receiving more junk mail. If there's any email I want to keep, I will forward it myself to my personal/business email account.

I hate when stores ask you for personal info that they do not need to know. Email? No sorry, don't own a computer. Postal/zip code? Sorry, just moved, don't know it.

My main email address is so old that pretty much every spammer in the world has it on their list a few times over. I get about 20-30 spams a day that make it past the spam filters. Ironically, I kill 90% of it simply by auto-deleting anything that does not have my address or name in the TO: header field. For some reason, most of the spam that comes my way either has some other guy's email address or "undisclosed recipients" in there. There are a few legitimate groups that send me mail like that and I just whitelist them so it all comes through.

But for cycle gear, they use my email address so I had to specifically blacklist them.

Instead of complaining about it here, go to the bottom of the email and click the "unsubscribe" link. Whoa it's like magic isn't it?

The only reason people get spam is because they are careless or clueless. Any time you enter your email anywhere, you need to uncheck the boxes that say "sign me up for the newsletter and promotional emails." If you don't, it's your own fault.

I have been using the same two email addresses for about 10 years. One spam, and one personal. And even in my spam box I only get a few emails a month (usually after I make a purchase) and I just unsubscribe before deleting them.

For the record, I've bought from cycle gear and never get a single email from them aside from receipt and shipping confirmation. Don't crap on a company just because you don't know how to use the internets.

Well, I have to tell you that I DO know how to use the Internet and have been using it longer than most people. Quite frankly, I resent your implication that its my own fault somehow. I HAVE clicked UNSUBSCRIBE numerous times and the spams keep coming. I ALWAYS UNCHECK the "send me spam" checkboxes. Furthermore, why would you think a company was ethical when you have to UN-check that box. If people really wanted their spam, they would CHECK the box themselves.

SO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU ACCUSE SOMEONE OF NOT KNOWING HOW TO USE THE INTERNET.

If you aren't getting spam on a 10 year old email address, it means that its being filtered long before it gets to you. That also means that your not getting all your legitimate email as well. That's how spam filters work.

Ok I should clarify, I have 21 emails that my spam filter picked up in the past 30 days, and they are all the generic "male enhancement," "business opportunity," "job interview" and "discount luxury watches / jewelery" type of emails that are TRULY unsolicited. It's very rare that I ever have to actually mark something as spam to keep it from getting to my inbox, and generally it's because certain sites can take up to a week to register your "unsubscription".

The emails you are talking about are not true spam. They're marketing emails that you agree to receive when you neglect to opt out. Marketing does not make a company evil. That's how they survive. And the fact that you have to opt out of their marketing emails has absolutely no bearing on whether the company is ethical or not. I defy you to find anywhere that allows you to "opt in" to spam instead of opting out of it.

Wait, so now the company is "unethical" because they assume that if you're shopping with them, suggesting by default that you opt into their mailing list might be mutually beneficial? Are there ANY companies that don't do that? I know I'm biased since I've been shopping with them for years, the employees at my local shop have always been great to me, and now that I've just started working there, I understand why I always liked them, but come on. The idea that a company is now horrible and evil on the basis that they're advertising their deals to their customers unless you specifically say you don't want them to is a bit of a stretch.

I've read some pretty questionable opinions on the internet before, but damn

Yes, there are quite a few that make you CHECK the "send me spam" box before they start spamming you. I can't say I have EVER gotten a spam from amazon. I buy stuff there all the time. I have gotten spam from other companies that I never checked or didn't un-check the box, but clicking the unsubscribe link has always ended it.

Just looked in my spam folder. Got another spam from cycle gear.

If CG was ethical, they wouldn't spam people who have requested numerous times for them to stop. I have even sent them emails requesting that they stop, but they refuse.

Yes, it doesn't matter who is sending it. If it wasn't requested, then its spam.

So, technically, it's not SPAM, as you've done business with this company and it falls under the class of Marketing, however, there are still laws that protect the consumer in these cases. Send them an email threatening to report them under violation of the CAN-SPAM act of 2003 - that's usually worked for me in the past. Specifically, the thing that they are violating is the non-compliance with the Unsubscribe parts of the act. I suspect that the issue you have is a result of a technical glitch in their system, rather than an intent to ignore your requests. Many companies sending mass emails nowadays outsource to dedicated mass-marketing companies.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN-SPA...ibe_compliance

Having said that I personally think CG rocks - the people in my local store are always completely friendly and helpful.

Do I hate spammers?

Guilty as charged.

Yes, I do go to the local cycle gear and buy stuff. Even now. But I won't be ordering anything online from them because its a pain in the butt to do so without giving them a working email address. In the store, I just say I haven't got one or give them "null@dev.com".

They are aware that they are sending me spam after I have requested that they stop. I guess I should send it to CAN-SPAM or SPAMCOP or one of those.

Solved - maybe

I think I have finally figured out how to stop them from spamming me. Although "unsubscribe" doesn't work, it will allow me to change the "spam to" address. So I changed it to a fake email address. I didn't think that would work, but so far it has. Its been about a week now and no spam from them.

Cool. Like I said, it helps to have 2 email addresses. Or you can just learn how to use the labels and filters in your inbox to sort your mail and spam automatically...

I use the filters all the time and thats why cycle gear always goes to spam. But I always check it every so often to make sure nothing important got sent there by mistake. I'm sure it was just a computer glitch on cycle gear's part, but they should have fixed it when I complained about it.
