Smile Stalled

So my ninja 250 2009 Stalled on me a couple of days ago.
I took out the air filter and it was really dirty so and the airbox I have managed to take airbox out clean it.
Now I can't figure it out how to put it back in with the Metal piece getting where it needs to be. Are there any tricks on how to get to go back?
So thinking of ditching the air box and Go with the pod K&N R-0990 and Uni Filter UP-104 5/8" for the crank case so I am curios. Just because I can't fit it back in plus I am constantly running rich cause my sparks are blackish. I also leave in Colorado springs elevation ~6000 feet.
What filter should I use for the top of the engine block?

I'm interested in this because I could not figure out how to get that metal screen out. I wouldn't switch to pods because then you would have to work on the carbs to get the right AF mix. How were you able to pull that screen out anywho?

Oh so I striped almost everything off the bike. Then took all the bolts out that hold the air box together and then moved the whole assembly back because there is more space there and then took that smaller part of the box and tilted it slightly and that gave me space to pull out the screen and then it all just comes out.
Putting it back is kinda baffling me.

Dont put pods on. It will have you chasing all sorts of things for a long time with jetting. The plugs were probably dark because the plugged air filter wasn't flowing any air. Look up some DIY or youtube video on how to reinstall whatever your having trouble with. If you are talking about the backfire mesh I had a similar experience. Just took some tricks and patience to get everything back together
