Head Gasket Replacement

Well boys at 22,000 and change It looks like I blew my head gasket. I have a watery mixture of oil and coolant bubbling out of the seam between the cylinder block and the head, right below the #2 cylinder exhaust port. That is what I get for running 12,000+ RPM for 60 miles a day every day for the past year. I ordered the parts I need and I will dig in this weekend. Parts should be here Monday. (Bike Bandit screwed me so I cancelled my order and went with Cheap Cycle Parts. They said that it would ship in 1-2 days, but when I placed the order they said it would take 5 to get the part, then it would ship in 1-2 days and then 2 day air. That a week and a half. Cheap Cycle Parts had it in stock and will have it to me by Monday at the latest).

Does anyone know if you put a sealant on the gasket? I didn't see any details in the manual. I hope to be running by Wednesday.

I never put any type of sealant or adhesive on head gaskets before on all my automotive rebuilds. I imagine the same goes for motorcycle engines.

Clean everything and use a new gasket.

If you want a copper head gasket. I payed the set up fee to have the gasket pattern put into the computer at copper head gaskets. com.

Clean all old gasket trace with acetone or something similar; no sealant.

Tightening sequence and proper torque will do.

What is the advantage of copper, other than it's malleability for a good seal?
Any potential problems with using a copper and not the oem? This is the first time I've heard of this.

I don't have a link to the page . But if you go on the web page for copper head gaskets . Com they have a big article . I got thicker than stock gaskets to lower compression.

I have never heard of using any kind of sealant on head gaskets. The gasket itself with deform under torque creating a quality seal.

Seems like a copper gasket is great when dealing with modified engines as used by Racer X. For typical applications a normal crush type gasket is fine.

Thanks for the advice. I've used sealant on old engines, and on an old outboard. I also did my T/A dry (newer engine). So I just wanted to check that I will do the OEM replacement dry. Thank you all.

On the flat machined surface? Sounds like coolant and oil passages but I haven't had mine off so I don't know what it looks like in there.
