Battery size

The 08 Ninja comes with a 6AH Battery. I understand that the 09-10 has an 8 or 10AH Battery. Does anybody know if the battery compartment was enlarged or is the 8 or 10AH Battery the same size as the 6 ?

Alex - where did you hear that the battery changed for 09/10? Yuasa lists the exact same part number for 08 & 09 250r's (a 6AH one), so I'd imagine the compartment didn't change at all, even if the battery itself happened to.

Yup Yuasa lists the same battery for 2008 and 2009:

Battery Family: Maintenance Free
Battery Type: YTX7A-BS
Voltage: 12
Capacity: 6
Dimensions: 6" x 3.4375" x 3.75"
Weight: 5.3lbs.
Metric Dimensions: 150mm x 87mm x 94mm
MetricWeight: 2.4kg
Acid Volume: 0.33
Amps: 0.7
C.C.A.: 90

http://www.yuasabatteries.com/

On the 2nd gen models Kawasaki switched to a smaller battery at some point and put a rubber insert into the battery box to make it fit.

If you want a more powerful battery the YTZ10S will fit. It is a little heavier but has a higher capacity and C.C.A.

Just found this battery on eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YTX7A...item1e5a0ef3e3
It is .1 lbs heavier then the stock but it is a 9 Ah. A cool thing about it is it has two sets of terminals, so you could hook extra accessories without stacking them all on one terminal.

My 08 also came with the YTX7A-BS. I read somwhere that the 09 has a larger capacity battery--not necessarily a bigger one. I think that a 10AH battery--even though it is heavier, would be a good upgrade. I took my battery off the "Tender" and let it rest for 18 hours. When I tested it, the voltage was 14.4V. Not bad for a tiny two year old battery. I sometimes feel that I am working the electrical system a bit hard with two 70W Xenon Extreme White headlights, two 35W Halogen fog lights, and a 30W Halogen tail light. I usually run the Low Beam and the two fog lights when riding. Three white lights in a triangular configuration would be difficult not to identify as a motorcycle. When I use both high and low beam and the two fog lights, I put a lot of light down the road.

Ken, The battery you found is an AGM Battery. That battery will take 100% of its rated capacity in a charge. It would call on the bike`s charging system to put out the max all the time. I doubt that our charging coil is capable of putting out 9Amps on a continuous basis. Our 6Ah battery is only capable of taking 25% of its rated capacity without doing damage. That translates into 1.5Ampsat 14.8V. If it were a Gel-Cell Battery, it would take 3Amps at 14.2V. For anything but a conventional Lead Acid Battery (which is what ours is), the charging output would have to be changed or the charging coil would be damaged.

My service manual has the alternator rated output as 19A@5,000r/min (rpm) 14 V. That's not enough output to charge the battery?

That's kinda pushing it. All that light will eventually leave you in the dark. Those lights on at one time would be using 240W . That's over 16.6 A @ 14.4V. Your definitly reducing the lifetime of your alternator.

But then again, my horn alone pulls 225W at 14.4V for a insane 15.63A to itself!

I will stop running the fog lights. The Xenon headlight bulbs seem to do a good job lighting the way. I will, however be able to use them in the fog with the low beam. I may get 20W bulbs for the fog lights. 20W each will cut through the fog fine.

Was looking for battery info, and remembering this thread. Looking at the yuasa site, only the 08 got the YTX7A-BS. 09 up gets the YTX9-BS.

For those with 08's wondering if the bigger battery will fit. It becomes apparent when the old battery is out, 1/2" pad under the original one

The 9a Bs battery will fit in the 08 model without the pad underneath it. The 08 models come with a pad underneath the 7a Bs.
I just bought myself a 9a bs battery and placed it on top of the pad, for shock resistance, not sure if it matters to have the pad under or not, but if you keep the pad under, that cover that should be on top of the battery will not fit. I might take out the pad and see if the cover will fit, just because I'm afraid the battery and the terminals will be more vulnerable to rain.

But the 9a does fit if you want a battery with a little more capacity.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

But would this battery fit into my 2008 ninja 250R ex250-j ?

it sais it will fit but the size is 7 x 6.2 x 5 inches.
