RPMs hang after shimming

I know this has been addressed but for the life of me I cannot find the thread.

I have a Yoshi Slip-on and was noticing lackluster throttle response and popping when decelerating. I added 2 washers and did the Kleen elim. Upon starting, I noticied blackish liquid coming from the exhaust, darkish smoke, and when I blip the throttle the rpms hang before slowing returning to idle. Also the choke lever seems a bit different - hard to explain but it feels like only 25% of the choke lever position actually increases the choke. It is also less responsive - takes a couple seconds to kick in. I have not yet taken it for a ride but I am wondering if my fuel is too rich and I should remove a washer or snorkel before re-assemblng. Any help appreciated.

A couple things.
  • what size washers did you use? They get jammed in the slide if they're too big.
  • are you sure you go the caps back on without pinching the diaphragms anywhere? those have to be seated just right and make the bike run like crap when they're pinched.

I used 3mm washers. I don't believe I pinched anything, I followed the DIY very closely. I just realized that I took it for a ride at 4:30 this morn after shimming and I didn't notice this problem (forgot about that, I barely slept). The only thing I have done since then is the Kleen air removal.

I'm gonna button her up and take her for a ride and see if I notice anything wrong. I'll let you know.

Quote:
If the throttle is lightly "blipped" at idle, and the rpm "hangs up" before dropping to the set idle speed, and there are no intake leaks and the idle speed is set at less than 1000 rpm, the mixture screws are probably too lean: try 1/2 turn out, to richen mixture. Be sure there are no intake leaks and the idle speed is set at less than 1000 rpm!

If all she did was change to slip-ons, the idle mix isn't going to be off far enough to hang badly. Trust me.

@BlackNinja8 you might also want to double check your work on your Kleen system removal. I would say, double check the carbs to make sure the slides aren't folded or kinked, and double check the kleen system removal.

Went for a good 30 mile drive and it seems better than ever. The hanging problem went away and that one occurance was an isolated incident. I stopped along the way and restarted 5 or so times, tested different speeds and throttle inputs and its the best its ever been! Go figure. I can only attribute it to a cold start after shimming and Kleen removal? I had 1/8 of a tank and the bike on a rear stand when the problem occured perhaps since i had just reconnected the vacuum and fuel line to the petcock there was some issue with fuel delivery that worked itself out.

Shims have delivered more linear power delivery which was exactly what I was hoping for. Bike feels much more street worthy now without buzzing through gears. Kleen air removal doesn't seem to have cured the exhaust pop on rough engine braking but when delivering some throttle on the downshift I get no popping at all. Well worth the time spent. Next I'm hoping a 15T will give me the extra depth in the low range. That and the linear power from shimming will make for a great commuter.

@Chone thanks again for your help.

No problem. Glad it sorted itself out.
