Any riders live / have been to Bangor or Portland, Maine?

Friends and I are planning a road trip...

I have been to some of the lighthouses and one lobster restaurant by the sea in Portland...are there any riders here who have been to Maine? where else can we go to there? any suggestions? Thanks!!!

For tourist stuff, Portland Headlight.

Maybe hit Acadia National Park (loop road is good for sights and the view from the top of Cadillac Mountain is awesome)

Sailariel (spelling?) probably knows a lot more to see than I do. Do you plan on just takin 95 or back roads?

If you are going to do Maine, Rte 1 is the way to go. There are all sorts of nice little towns where sea food restaurants are great and there are lots of things to see. Going North (it is really East) on 1, you have wiscasset, Bath, Brunswick, Thomaston, Rockland, Rockport, Camden. Lincolnville Beach, Belfast, Searsport, Bucksport, Ellsworth (Friend and Friend Biggest Kawi Dealer in Maine), Trenton, Mount Desert Island, Acadia Park, and Bar Harbor. Rte 1 is very popular with motorcyclists. Also all Maine lobsters are good--have not met a bad one yet.

I love following the 1 to Owl's Head Maine. Very beautiful drive especially now with the leaves changing colors. If you go to Owl's Head you should definitely stop at the general store where their burger has been voted the Food Network's best burger.

Alex gave some very good suggestions. In regards to actually in Portland there is the Seadogs stadium (Red Sox minor league stadium), go to the "Great Lost Bear" in a bar/restaurant right on Forest Ave just outside of downtown Portland. You could also take the Ferry out to Peak's Island, I believe there is a few things on the Island.

Thanks for the suggestions folks...

I've been to Portland but it was just for a day..I didn't ride there though.. we did a driving tour of the 6 lighthouses.. I remember I saw the most photographed lighthouse in the US..or was it world?

We also ate at this seaside lobster place...lobster shack I think is the name..and then headed back home..

This time there will be two bikes and a car going there...we might take 95 then move to rte1..hopefully the weather is great this weekend or else I have to be a wuss and sit in a car for 6 hrs..

Thanks again for the tips guys..I'll google all of them when I get home..

Don't know if you have headed for Maine yet but one word of caution, i wouldn't recommend going on the 1 on the bike. There is a ton of leaves flying around on the road everywhere. Could make for a dangerous trip especially with the bad weather for the next couple of days.

Thanks for the warning blueraven.....I ended up not riding but we instead drove there last weekend..we had a great time..we went to stephen king's house in bangor..I actually saw him come out of the house to pick up his newspaper...was too shy to call him and ask for a picture though but it was great...

we also went to acadia national park..saw a lot of riders because the weather was good..a bit chilly but if you are ATGATT its still comfy..next summer I'd like to ride there to the mountain peak..awesome views and a few twisties...

then we ate some lobsters..went to portland I think the place was called old port city or something...cobblestone streets..great roadtrip over the weekend...

Probably Old Port Tavern. That cobblestone street is entertaining to watch after people (especially girls in heels) come out of the bars.
