So my bike turns off at an intersection

My bike turned off at an intersection at a red light and luckily I was on the farthest right lane so I just pulled up into an empty parking lot nearby. I tried charging it with a car (turned off) at 5-10 minute intervals for about an hour and tried push starting it and nothing. It would just click. After about an hour, I tried another push start, it worked, and I went straight home. I know the battery is faulty because a while back I took it to Auto Zone and they told me one of the cells was dead. Knowing this, I decided to squeeze every drop of juice out of that battery before buying a new one. I think now is the time to buy another one. Any suggestions as to which one? And how do I know which part number? I called wal-mart and nothing, other car part shops sell them for about $134. Amazon has them at about $30 so now I just need to know which one. A friend of mine had a similar issue but his turned off on the high way. His issue was that he needed a new stator. I don't know in my case but here is the plan:

Step #1. Get a new Battery.
Step #2. Evaluate the effectiveness of Step#1

All you need to know:
http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Battery_stuff

Part number for Ninja 250 95-07 is Yuasa YTX7L-BS or or X7L-BS (generic).
That battery is maintenance-free.

+1 million.

My original battery has been going strong since 09 for over 50,000 miles. Where I live temps go from 95 to -13 farenheit. I've never once pulled my battery or winterized it and its never failed to start, other than maybe needing choke it starts up first time every time.
Then again other than this past winter which was brutal, the longest my bike has been without a ride is 3-4 weeks and its kept in a garage.

I do ride my bike at least 4 days a week and today I rode it today for 30 minutes before turning it off to have lunch. On the ride back home is when it turned off. Thanks for the part number.

Bought a battery for the 250 this spring. The local Kawi dealer didn't have one in stock so I ended up getting one from batteries plus. It came with a one year warranty and was $30 cheaper. Yuasa makes a good battery but there are other good options IMO.

I agree, regular battery maintenance and keeping a good charge on it means more than the brand name.

To the OP, running a bad battery puts a lot of extra load on the charging system, and charging system problems = $$$$.
Not only that, they fail at the most inopportune times as you found out.

I just really want to ride my pony again and I think I will just take the $67 battery they have at O'Reillys Auto Parts.
I believe the brand is Super Start.
Does anyone advise against it?
If not then I will order it from Amazon and wait a few days.

Here is the link of the battery that I will buy in about 9 hours when they open.

I've been running an O'Reilly battery for a year now and its still going strong. I was not impressed with the 90 day warranty but the battery seems to be good.

Ok. I just bought the battery oriellys part number GTX7LBS and the electrolyte says to only use it on CTX7LBS. IS it compatible? Is it the same thing or did they give me the wrong electrolyte?

I bought a cheap Chinese made battery from Batteries Plus in 2008 for the VN750. It lasted 18 months and died unexpectedly, leaving me stranded. I replaced it with a U.S. made battery that is still going strong. Yes, a few U.S. companies still make motorcycle batteries. Unfortunately, none fit the Ninja.

Another vote for Yuasa batteries. They only cost a few dollars more than the crappy batteries, and last a long time. The one in my 2004 Rebel is original.

I like the Deka AGMs from Advance Auto. They're around $50 with a coupon code, and you can pick them up right away. I bought mine in August 2010 for the VN700, and it's still going strong in the EX500, even after spending a winter sitting on the cold garage floor.

I thought at one time I found a cross-match part number at http://www.dekacatalog.com/ for a 250, but I don't remember the details and the site is acting up for me at the moment.

Turns out it`s not the battery. Here is a picture of the thing that clicks and I think it needs to be changed.
Does anyone know what it is called?

Thank you. I was really hoping that changing the battery would fix it but I don't mind. I learn my bike more and more.

That starter solenoid is a relay for starting up only, so all the current going through the starter does not need to go through the little starting button:

My O'Reilly battery is part number etx9, the posts are slightly too wide so I have the terminals upside down. Still works great.

I`m going to replace the selenoid relay. Hopefully that fixes the problem.

So do I need to replace the selenoid relay as well?

Changed both battery and selenoid relay and nothing. It still does not turn on. Just clicks but does nothing. It almost turned on and then it just went back to clicking. I miss riding.

Make sure your resting voltage is 12.8 or close to it otherwise the battery may not have enough charge to start the bike.
If the voltage is fine then you possibly have a bad starter needing a replacement, you could pull it out and see if it works.

Voltage is like 13.5. Where is the Starter located and how do I test it? And about how much do they cost?
