Dani Pedrosa was once again the fastest man on Saturday morning at Motegi, taking control at the halfway mark and posting a time a quarter of a second under the race lap record. Jorge Lorenzo took 2nd spot once again, also under the lap record but only by a few thousandths of a second. Behind Lorenzo came his Factory Yamaha teammate Ben Spies, the Texan having picked up the pace once he had a chance to use the soft tire. Andrea Dovizioso made it three Yamahas in the top four, the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha man just behind Spies. Alvaro Bautista is the second Honda, the San Carlo Gresini Honda man showing impressive speed to take 5th spot, anead of the second Monster Tech 3 Yamaha man Cal Crutchlow and Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner.
