[visordown.com] - Royal Enfield rumoured to be developing new middleweight model

ROYAL ENFIELD is rumoured to be developing a new 600–650cc twin-cylinder bike codenamed ‘P61’ at its Leicestershire R&D centre, designed to appeal to cruiser riders in Europe and America.

The new model, potentially the parallel twin the UK importer told us was coming, is likely to be launched next year, says the Indian Economic Times.

A new 600–650cc bike fits with Royal Enfield’s stated ambition to globally dominate the market for bikes between 200cc to 750cc, and compared to its existing models, may prove to be a more tempting prospect for riders in Europe and the US.

It’ll also address a problem highlighted by Royal Enfield CEO Siddhartha Lal – that its current range of bikes ‘don’t really hit the right highway speeds.’

Lal, who has recently moved to London to spearhead the brand’s global development, has said: ‘We have the next platform, which will address that need.’ He hasn’t commented any further on the details of what could be the largest capacity bike in RE's range.

Royal Enfield is also said to be developing new, larger capacity versions of the Classic (codenamed D41) and Thunderbird (D61), also designed to help its growth across the world.
