It looks good on paper. However, I have learned to not trust the quality of HP computers. The quality they are known for in printers is for some reason usually lacking in their computers.

I find that the areas where pre-built computers save on costs is the motherboard and power supply. The CPU, GPU and other components are usually from better manufacturers and are of better quality. All the other features (like packaged peripherals and media drives) seem like a good deal for someone who wants a versatile low-maintenance PC.
It might be worth it to get that and upgrade the power supply and/or mobo to a $50-$75 brand name unit, but if you wanted a zero-hassle PC, this may be counterintuitive. |

If you are going to replace mobo, might as well built an entire PC yourself.
I worked at a software division of HP, it totally sucked. I wouldn't trust their HW, either. Cheap b**ds. |

I've found it the other way around. The HP laptop I bought my wife 5 years ago is still running flawlessly. Same with the one I bought my daughter 2 years ago. However, the last 2 HP printers I bought are junk.

First off, I know that I'm a little late to this thread as I see that the bidding has ended on eBay, but for future reference: HP is actually a good-quality brand (IMO at least). I have to fix everyone's computers that I know and I don't think I've ever had to fix an HP. However, the only thing that I would be aware of on a computer tower like that is the AMD processor it uses. AMD processors are great for gaming and animation (what I'm majoring in in college, and yes, I am a geek) but when it comes to basic use they have a tendency to overheat easily due to the amount of power they require to put into running efficiently. I've always been a fan of Macs (probably way too expensive) but any other tower that uses an Intel processor is a fairly safe bet as they're mainly used for basic web browsing and computer use. In simple terms, 1 TB 8GB DDR3 basically means that this computer is monstrously fast but the only thing that would keep me from getting it would be the processor. I hope this helped for the future and I didn't sound too nerdy while writing it hahaha

I've owned HP and Compaq....they don't use great components. The longest running Compaq I have owned started acting up in a big way after 2 years. I still have a computer I built that is 7 years old and still runs great. My latest build is my main PC, and it flies.
I'll stick with my current setup for now: Desktop: PC (for gaming, movies and iTunes library) Laptop: Mac (for everything else)

What specific components that they use would you say are inferior to their dell, hp or toshiba counterparts?

HP and Compaq are the same thing, so I can't see anyone favoring one over the other.
I like splurging on the mobo and all that. A good quality mobo will last so long it isn't even funny. None of the cheap stuff. I do not spend less than $100 on a mobo. I make sure it is using higher quality (more robust) components on it. Last thing I need is a single resistor starting to go bad to give me a ton of problems. Build your own, use good stuff in it, and it will run for a long time.

I had one compaq...... only one. Right at the end of the very short warranty, the bloody hard drive died. This was not even a year old since at the time their warranty didn't even last a year. Well I found out the hard way why the warranty didn't last a year.
