[visordown.com] - No review of drink drive limit in England and Wales

ANDREW Jones MP, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, has confirmed that there will be no review of the drink drive limit in England and Wales.

Mr Jones had told MPs he was to have discussions with his Scottish counterpart about how the change to the drink driving law there affected road safety.

He had previously said that there was ‘robust evidence’ that road safety in Scotland had improved after the legal limit was lowered from 80 to 50mg per 100ml of blood in December 2014.

Following the news that the law in England and Wales is to remain unchanged, Mr Jones said: ‘The government believes rigorous enforcement and serious penalties for drink-drivers are a more effective deterrent than changing the drink-driving limit.

‘Britain continues to have some of the safest roads in the world because we crack down on those who break the law.’

The news was negatively received by road safety campaigners, include the charity Brake, whose campaigns director Gary Rae said:

‘We would urge the minister to listen to and learn from his Scottish counterpart and respect the wishes of both the British public and the police by following Scotland’s lead and dropping the drink drive limit. Early indications show a clear reduction in offences in Scotland which can only make our roads safer and mean fewer devastating preventable deaths and injuries. This would be a useful step in moving towards a complete zero tolerance of drink driving, which is the only way to make our roads safe.’
