"conversion" sprocket question
I want to go to a 15/43 combo and I found a rear sprocket, but the item description says it's a 520 conversion sprocket. Why do they call it a conversion sprocket if the factory chain is a 520 chain?

I think it's only because many (most?) bikes would be converting from a 525 or 530 chain to a 520. We're already at 520.

Thanks Alex. I'm going to order it and cross my fingers that there's nothing wrong with it. Are the rear sprockets the same between the old gen and new?

I think I'm going to pass on the drive systems sprockets. They list their stuff for 88-10 so I'm guessing the sprockets are for the pregen.

Well, according to the Supersprox and Vortex websites, the rear sprockets are the same.
42041-0011 is the part number I found off of cheapcycleparts.com and the numbers apply to both a 2005 and a 2009.

Between the ??-07 bikes and the 08-11 bikes the rear sprockets are the same. The front sprockets, not exactly the same. BUT the sprocket for the older models does fit and as far as I can tell the very slightly thicker (like 1/2 mm) new model one is made of unobtanium.

In regards to rear sprockets,is there a benefit to alloy over steel? weight? wear?

Aluminum sprockets are lighter, but wear significantly faster. No real benefit for a streetbike.

Oh well, I just realized that the JT 43t sprocket I ordered from Tucker Rocky is alloy and it should be here tommorow. I should have paid more attention when I ordered it. I will post how long it last and go back to steel from there.

It would be interesting to see how long it takes to wear the AL sprocket. I was actually concerned with the teeth breaking off, but with such a low HP bike, I don't think that's a real issue. I went with a Drive Systems superlite rear sprocket. Made of Steel and supposed to be as light as a supersprox. I almost bought a supersprox until I read some not so favorable reviews on them. Also picked up a Driven front sprocket from fatbikez for $22 shipped . Ordered up a DID chain as well.

I got the 15t front for $18 and the rear 43t was $46. I just hope I get a few hundred miles out of the alloy but like you said these bikes do not have much hp.

Yeah, the JT's are cheaper, but it's difficult to know which one is the right one. Lots of info stating one way or the other. The driven has at least one person who says that there are no shims needed for it. I don't mind the extra $5 since if it needed shims, that's additional cost and time needed.

Installed the 43t alloy last night which now gives me a 15/43. Cruising in to work this morning at 80 in the diamond lane was so nice! I still had power to enter the freeway comfortably without lugging. Feels like I can actually use first gear now, before it was a joke. I do love this set up. OBTW the weight diff between steel and alloy is incredible, and the bright color looks awesome surrounded by all of that black.

The issue of course, is that it's bolted directly to a 30+ pound rotating wheel/tire combination, where the weight differences of a small sprocket right in the middle doesn't affect much at all.

I agree. When considering which to buy, I would prefer the longevity of the steel to the alloy over the .1 HP you might be freeing up.
