Rejoice! My key has arrived!
I am finally a ninjetter again After losing my only ninja keys mid-march, I have been without the 250. Being the procrastinator I am and typical lazy, I didn't do anything about it for a month. I started to get the itch to ride her again though and missed the lightweighted-ness and cornering prowess so finally got off my ass to get another key made.
This is where I hit a wall. I never got a second key so I searched the forums about how to get a key made and found out the key code is on the ignition. Awesome! "Hey Mr. locksmith, how much to make a key if I have a key code?" "$25" "No way! I'll be over in 5 minutes!" Locksmith looks in his book and sees that 250 keycodes are between 1000-2000 and mine is definitely in that range. "Sorry, but it doesn't look like Kawasaki published the key patterns for them yet." "What can you do then?" "Come over to your place (5 blocks away) and cut a key for $200." I called 5 other locksmiths and 6 dealerships that all said they can cut the key for me, but every time I get there, same story. Kawasaki didn't publish the key patterns yet for my bike. I finally caved in and called Hillbilly Cycles in WV without much hope since none of the dealerships here can do it. After talking to them, it didn't seem like a problem for them to make it at all. "Thanks for adding another pin (San Diego) on our map." Apparently tons of ninjetters from across the country call them. I ordered it on 07/16/11 and was starting to lose hope again, but my key arrived today! And it turns! And my battery still works! And...oh $%#!, I lent my pod filters to Dustin. $%#! I took out my carbs to help Kevin and never put them back in. Moral of the story: Do not help friends TLDNR My key arrived today. My precious (not Alex): FYI, if you lose your keys, apparently only Hillbilly has the Kawasaki connection. Also, only $40. Hillbilly Cycle Sales www.hillbillycycle.com 304 425-4321 |

I have 110's up front. BT's aren't too bad, but I'll probably drop down sizes on my next tire since it feels less flickable. |

No need to be. I still have to renew my registration before I can legally take it out. I'm just a big procrastinator.

$32 for the key and $8 for shipping and handling so it came out to like $42.

So if I have to get my key replaced and I have the silver dog tag with the keycode on it where do I go to get the key made? Any locksmith? Call Kawasaki?

You would think locksmiths or dealers would be able to, but none of the ones by me could (5 locksmiths and 6 dealerships). They all can create a key if you bring them your ignition, but they're held on by security screws. Locksmiths can create a key by going to your bike, but they charge a lot more for it. In the end, for some odd reason, only Hillbilly's can create one with a key code.
I would still try your local places since it will be faster and let us know how it goes. |
