I work on a lot of BMWs. They use a lot of plastic in the engine parts. There is no problem and many benefits to this. And it's great to during the normal service life of the parts. But once past the service limit. It is trash. Very little repair potential for a plastic engine. That is not the concern of anyone anymore.

Thank you for the reply, Eric.
But please let me make it more clear, that is not what we know by now.
More than that it means: the complete engine from plastic.
The last sentence says: 'The scientists intend to take their research further by developing a multi-cylinder plastics-based engine, including the crankshaft bearings.'

I'd love to see that taken further: a 3D Printable plastic engine.

It will work great and I bet it does not need oil. Modern plastic can be made with a lubricating quality. Also heat dissipation. Plastic parts maybe with ceramic coatings could keep the heat in the exhaust and not waste energy heating everything else.

It would be really lightweight and cheap too. I'll get excited when I see it though.

I used to joke about how BMW's are made out of so much plastic that theyd make the whole engine out of it if they could. Well, they're getting there...

Back around 1985 there were several plastic engines running I think Cosworth was one and may have even raced it.

What I find striking is the fact they are making a piston engine out of plastic. Like a carbon fiber dinosaur.
I guess the good old piston and rod engine has stood the test of time. There may be different types of engines out there, but better is yet to be proven.
