$5600 out the door?

Local dealer quoted me $5600 out the door for a Green 2012 250r. Is this a good price?

Sounds about right -- you can try to work them down some, but I doubt it, the dealers say they don't have much profit zone in these bikes.

I just paid $5400 and some change for mine, a red/black SE. You probably could work it down a couple hundred

That's way too much. Try to get it down to $5000. Be willing to walk away if the dealer is not cooperative.

/\ Then they will just sell it to the next person. Demand is very high for these bikes, IE the high prices. Buy used and spend ~$3500 or buy new and spend ~$5500. You aren't going to get a brand new 250 for 4 grand.

Thats terrible... Go to a different state with less tax and fees, I'm from idaho but live in california so i bought mine in idaho and paid 4700 for a 2012 red ninja 250. Dont get ripped off cause your state has higher sales tax.

Unfortunately buying out of state isn't really an option for me. The dealer is basically telling me the same things. They don't make much profit on the bike and the owner (per the salesman) isn't really willing to budge on pricing because the bikes are selling at the price listed. $5600 total cost after all fees for the green bike and $5900 for a special edition. Oh and they "can probably throw in helmet and such..." locally I haven't been able to find much used. I am prequalified for $5500 already and I have enough cash to get the SE (I want the black spark color and will remove those stupid pinstripes. No offense to anyone who has them I just don't like the pinstriping). I think I'm just gonma take a check in for the amount and hope they will come down some. If not from what I've gathered the price is about average for a new bike from the dealer...

I ended up paying $5300 asking price last year, out of 6 dealers in Illinois besides Chicago, one dealer 80 miles away had the only one at that time and he knew it.

And do you already have gear? Don't forget you'll be dropping at least $700 on gear, that's going with "middle of the road" type of gear. Much more if you want high end stuff. And I second the notion to buy used. Check on craigslist in your area & the surrounding areas, as well as cycletrader.

The dealer will throw in helmet and gloves. If I get the green I can have almost all of it covered through the preapproval and I have $500 cash to cover a jacket and a few other things...

Both CycleTrader and Craigslist are only showing me dealer offers in my vicinity and almost zero results on used private party...

Got mine brand new 2 months ago for $4300 OTD. They also informed me that all the extra fees that you'd get with any other bike basically don't apply to the 250. Title and doc fees- $25. On top of that, I only paid tax. They also gave me 15% off my jacket and gloves. I called around and drove 4.5 hours to get it, but I got a good deal.

Bike prices are ridiculously high right now due to demand. My suggestion is to look around on local track day org message boards, racers always have bikes for sale for less. You won't get a brand new one, it may have track fairings and/or damage but you should be able to get it for 3K (TX prices).

If you are OK with the fact that as soon as you roll off the lot the bike is worth $4500 then that price is fine.

Personally it is a little much.

Good lord man! Its been a year now but i'm pretty sure i got out the door for just under 4400. No way on earth i'd pay 5000 for a 250.
I don't think i'd have a bike right now if i was quoted the prices you guys are paying.

yeah the dealer isn't budging much. I've called around to a few of the dealers that aren't too far away and they are all quoting me, for the most part, the same. The prices I have found are ranging from $5400-$5600 for the green. Now I'm just debating whether I even want to keep trying with the dealers, but I can't find anything in my vicinity used. Maybe I will just walk in with a check made out for $5400 and say it's all theirs if they give me the bike. Maybe they will be a little more willing to work with me if they see I have cash in hand and will leave with a bike then and there...

I've thrown this out a few times before but i guess this applies to the OP.

Not always, but a lot of times the dealerships don't care if you have cash in hand. Or shall i say the person who will say yay or nay doesn't care. Like at a car dealership, the finance manager is the guy that the sales person is going back to and saying "they're saying if we do blah blah blah they'll buy" and they come out of the room with another offer. That dudes the finance manager, even you arent financing. Thats just one of his duties since almost everyone finances. The problem here is that the finance manager gets comission off of everything...financed. So if you walk in with a wad of $100's he doesn't get a commission so you're not really sweating the deal for him (the guy that needs buttering up).

Just a little thing i learned when my wife worked at a dealership. Not all of them are set up this way but generally the bigger places are. But then the smaller places probably have less margin to bargain with you. Go in and find a way to butter up the sales guy and finance guy and they'll come down some.

Even when they say "man, we're losing money on this sale" nah. Go in at the end of the month and since they seem to be moving all these bikes so fast they must of met their quota qhich means they get kickbacks from the manufacturers. So this neeeever happens b/c they don't have too but technically if you go in at the right time they could sell you a bike for way under msrp just b/c it'll mean they meet their quota which gives the dealership more money than the tiny profit margin on a 250.

Ok so I found a 2011 Green SE that is listed for $3750. This is a much better deal than the $5600. What do you guys think? 300 miles, never been down. Matching helmet/jacket, and "a little wiggle room" on the price.

^^ Lol probably that's the case. The one I bought was listed from a dealer on craigslist with only pics of the right side..the PO had dropped it on the left side :P
But with only 137 miles on it & just 2 fairing sustaining some damage, it didn't keep me from buying it.

Thumbs up a little guidance

I'm currently in the market for buying a 250 myself and this is a guide that I found that has a lot of good general information about bikes.

http://www.clarity.net/~adam/buying-bike.html

It has a section about quizzing the owner, and it also tells you a lot of information on how to inspect a motorcycle in general before purchasing it.
There is a lot of information out there so don't get the wool pulled over your eyes

Also here in Virginia a week ago I was up to the dealer and one of the guys said that this month Kawi has a deal going on and they were selling the black and red bikes for 3700 + Dealer fee + Tags/tag/titles for a total of about 4300. The green bikes are not part of this months deal for them.

I've found a couple used 2011 around here that were apparently dropped at 5 mph practicing u-turns lol. If you feel like you are confident enough to look at a bike that was dropped; then you might be able to get one as low as 2700. Obviously the East coast is cheaper then West Coast it seems.
