### Painting Leathers ??? ###

I want to change the color of my leathers. Any suggestions on how to do this ??? I want to go from black to lighter colors for more visibility. Dyes over the black didn't do much, maybe some-kind of spray paint ??? Thanks

I saw a guy once that had his airbrushed... Looked decent, doubt it lasts very well. I've seen folks spray paint shoes, looked less ok but changed the color, still doubt it lasted well

You can glue sheets of thin colored vinyl to it. Lots of work though, you must cut them to shape...

Just put on a mesh hi vis vest Steve. Painting, dyeing, bleaching riding leathers has fail written all over it.

Buy lighter leather and stop buying black leather, would be one suggestion. Another suggestion, get custom leathers made in the colors you want.

Dyes darken, not lighten; and paint probably wouldn't hold up very well (elements, movement while wearing it, etc). If you want to have a unique color, start with a white jacket and use leather dyes. Also make sure to put a strong waterproofer over it.
For reference, I've done this. Dyed one of my jackets to a blue/purple last year.

you can even use food coloring to dye leather and its fine (i've done this for sheaths) but paint is a nono on leather. enamels and acrylics or anything with a solvent will eat away at the leather making it brittle and much more likely to tear. maybe water color paint would be okay.

Not to mention what it could do to the stitching. ijs

My wife's mom is the queen of dyes and bleaches... carpets, furniture and drapes. To go from black to a lighter color, your gunna have to used some sort of bleaching agent before going to another color. Even if it was possible with good looking results, it most likely would compromise the safety of the gear.
