After 30 days, posts are marked read for each user, so the unread count is essentially capped at that 30 day mark. In busy months it gets up to 10k - 12k posts, in slower months it's in the 7k - 9k range.

10,329 for me. I didn't know there was a cap. I wanted to get into 6 digits.

Yup - people on cell phones were accidentally hitting it when they meant to hit the unread posts link, so I made it less likely to be fat-fingered.
