on 50cc '86 Honda Spree today....pulled/drained tank and cleaned petcock. I believe first time ever tank drained, mesh filter cleared. While there fresh fuel/Stabil 360 added. I've cleaned carb prior. Starting 1st kick without battery, i blindly left the key on....duh.
Sorry, no pics.

Knocked these beauties off today, total split, full refurb, careful setup, the works. My property to be sold, look for a thread in marketplace.
The black powder coated brackets done by none other than our own member @jkv45. Great work, I'd encourage anyone needing powder coating to look him up at Apex Custom Coating 608-444-2202.

ditto again today. Encountered huge, though unmarked (for size) main jets. Comparing to a stock 105, metering was visually way too large. As the owner complained of fouling plugs and bikes resisting high RPM running, I do believe this was the problem. Reverted back to all OEM stock jetting, removing needle shims as well.

Todays victims...currently wrestling with an exceptionally bitchy 250 carbset. Why oh why must both bowl and top cover screws be overtightened to the point where a dremel is necessary to remove them? Surprise... the bowl gaskets (orings at one time) flatter than pancakes, no wonder screws were so overtightened...leak prevention.
Nice internals, eh? But "carbs are easy".....so says the internet..... meh, I'm well on my way to returning them to as new condition. Stay tuned.

additional problems found (beyond the obvious extensive varnish): - 1 clogged pilot jet - needles were incorrectly installed (left and right were juxtaposed, now corrected) - needle shims removed

Admittedly, Bob, I've (long ago) reached "benchmarks" within my carb processes through the use of unwavering, standardized, effective methods.
Certain "as received" variations of condition can produce differing visual outcomes, however functionally....each set I do are quite capable of "as new" performance levels. Even though it remains incumbent on owners to assure valve clearances are sufficient, correct petcock function, (new, fresh) fuel condition, ignition component's performance....sending carbs my way virtually eliminates them from the equation.

Didn't you make up a bench test setup for the carbs as well ? that must have been quite a feat to do in and of itself ! what does that setup test anyway ?
I bet you can actually see the pilot jet working and then more as the throttle is opened.... that has got to be a cool setup .... what do you have to power it with a shop VAC ??? .... Bob....

Within my service I utilize a gravity fed wet test for checking/setting fuel levels on various design carb sets. Note board is upside down? Flip it, its setup for EX500 and Ducati/Mikuni. Done during the reassembly process....prior to slide assembly phase.

currently on a 250 set today....upon disassembly found both choke plungers frozen in place. Soaking in WD40, to follow with heated ultrasonic treatment.
Pics to follow as I progress. Edit: choke plungers both removed, though I bent the end of 1. I'll handle a (no charge) replacement as I've got spares. Both currently in ultrasonic. I'm done for today.

Starts and runs great. I've made sure the intake boots are seated properly multiple times though, and I still get an inconsistent idle. I don't really care that much as it just fluctuates between 700 and 2000 rpm. It seems to average out to about 1500 though and doesn't die. I'm waiting to get a few more good rides in before I really start to care, honestly running is better than not.
I'll probably have another set for you to go through. My Dad told me he found a spare set I apparently gave him with the bike years ago. I didn't even remember doing that.

you may want to (individually) set each pilot screw for highest idle, best response. Do it after a ride, bike fully warmed up.

WAY too cold for carbs here right now, LOL. Done in my warm basement on a pro-quality machine...I'm currently researching and learning proper cleaning methods of fuel injectors using some spares from my Ducati SS800. Ultrasonic, reverse flush and other methods, followed by graduated flow testing, thus confirming results. Rebuild kits, (featuring inlet filter baskets and orings) ordered for 3 family owned Toyotas and the Ducati for further research and "live" testing come warm spring.
Interesting stuff, to say the least. #comeonspringdammit

taking full advantage of the carburetor "off season" educating myself in the finer points of cleaning/servicing fuel injectors. A new machine in my possession, I'm experimenting with its cleaning capabilities and features (reverse flow and ultrasonic capabilities).
My first working testbed using 4 Denso injectors removed from my Toyota Matrix 2.4 engine, which I thought was running great.....wow what a difference after an ultrasonic and reverse flow clean and new "kit" install (filter baskets, orings & seals). Smooth verywhere, steady idle, great throttle response. I'll be monitoring fuel consumption going forward. Next up to be my Ducati SS800 (Weber-Marelli injectors) when warmer weather finally returns. #comeonspringdammit

back on a set of especially nasty 250's today. Overtightened bowl screws needed dremel action to remove, as did all 8 brace screws. Badly discolored brass, clogged jets....yada yada. Completed pics to follow when completed.
