It lives

Got it running today on a remote tank. Used an old edger tank off my old yard tool that we robbed the motor for a go-cart. The fuel tank is rotted through and useless. luckily the fuel line and carbs under the tank were stored dry. I cannot believe that it started on the first try with a little help from starter fluid.

so, any tips on finding a fuel tank for a 95?

here is the bottom of the tank and a pic of the bike once we cleaned the dust off. it is in great shape. 2300 miles

oh I got another bike too. 2013 FZ1 it is a beast, still look forward to getting the ninja running, my son wants to learn to ride.

If I were in your position, I'd probably be checking eBay for a used tank, but when I've done that in the past, I've mostly found dented ones. I think you could save the tank with a dose of Caswell Phenol Novolac epoxy liner. You may need to temporarily plug the larger holes somehow, like with tape. That coating leaves a fairly thick layer of high quality and chemical resistant epoxy.

Triple jim, the tank is fubar. Rotted through, I could put a finger through it. I need a new tank. I wish I could use it but it is soft and ruined.

You might be surprised what 1/8" of good epoxy can do, but I understand your desire to start with a decent tank.

Search Ebay for a good used tank ( around $200 at last check a week ago for me ). Alternatively, you might find a cheap deal on CL, for a parts bike, but chances are that the tank will be bad also - or at least dented up. But, you never know...

tell me about this epoxy. how to apply ect please. I guess I could JB weld the hole and the epoxy inside would increase structural integrity?

Phenolic epoxy is a type of epoxy that is very resistant to chemicals. It's used to line huge commercial fuel storage tanks. You can buy it in various places, one being Caswell's site. I have not used it myself, but it's well known on the Kawasaki triples site that I spend time on, and I've had tanks lined with it in my shop. It's thick, and hardens without needing to evaporate solvents, since it's epoxy. You can go to Caswell's site and read about it, and you might be able to contact one of their tech support guys to see what he thinks about this possible application.

thank you for the info. it will definitely give me something to think about. knowing the motor runs makes me chomp at the bit to get the tank situation fized.

next weekend it is to replace all the dried out cracked hoses and such.

will be here Saturday, will work on it sunday afternoon with my son. Now that I have the FZ1, he will be riding the ninja when we get it going.

Perfect starter bike as he has only ridden dirt bikes a handful of times.

Did you talk to a Caswell guy?

I think it's imperative that the inside of the tank gets prepared exactly as the instructions describe, so the epoxy adheres well.

I'll be very interested in the details.

no, just ordered it off the site. I would have read instructions but maybe due to poor condition of tank I should call.

Found a good tank! had to drive a long way to get it. But went with the guy that sold me the bike and he paid for 1/2 of it as he left the fuel in the tank while it sat for a year which caused it to rot. I accepted his generous offer.

THE TANK GUY HAD MATCHING TANK! it is not in showroom condition but is solid although it has a bit of surface rust inside. I think vinegar will suffice to make it usable.

ordered a cheap ebay gas cap. I hope I can just make the old petcock work.

Now I just need to find the time to work on it with my son as it will be his bike. (he is 18 and wants so bad to ride) Oh and new tires, even though these tires look great they are OLD! Just got new tires on my big bike and they were only 4 years old and it rides and handles WAY better.

I hope to have the ninja running by next weekend and after next paycheck tires, registration and insurance. I am more exited to get this little bike going than I was when I got my 1000cc. I have blood from my knuckles on this ninja. It reminds me of when I was in college in 1989ish and i saw my first ninja when the coolest dude I have ever seen pulled up at the bonfire on one. This guy had a long flowing mullet and a sleeveless "AC/DC" tshirt and his girl has teased up bleached blonde hair and her jeans were SO TIGHT and acid washed and a black zipper shirt with white lace fingerless gloves!

the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

I said to my self "that is the most bitchin, ultra rad bike I have ever seen, and I will own one some day!"

i know it sounds strange but I now have a vested emotional interest in this bike. I want it to run and I want to call it a her and name it. My buddy had to drop me off at the house, I had a few beers when we got back here, my wife would say I am intoxcicated.

Good job on having your buddy drop you off after your beers.

My bike is definitely a "her" and has a name. She's Marigold McDuck. So it's not unheard of. Some of my cars have had names, too.
