Race number on a ribbon, everyone got one at the start, we were to tie it on somewhere for when the big paper number gets ripped off

1344 has it around her leg, 1331 around his arm, 1329, 1431, 1345 & a few in the background have it around their heads

Was just thinking about 2014 in review and I missed my 1000 mile running target by around 42 miles. The concussion in September from getting spit off at the the track kinda ruined a whole month for me and then getting the flu and junk for the last couple weeks sealed it in terms of being able to make it up. So 958 miles in 2014. Here is to trying again in 2015.

try doing 1 mile per year! so this year would be 2015 miles

that is less than 6 miles per day.

Maybe in the future lol. Right now my mileage goals were based on running a fixed distance every M-F at lunch at work. If I miss one for any reason I have to make it up on the weekends or with increased distance one day.

I try not to miss though as it cuts into my other fitness routines like cycling and some program stuff like P90X3 and Insanity. I was on target for beating my goal but literally missed the whole month of Sep and didn't push hard enough to cover it by the end of the year.

I haven't tried to run a mile since I was obese, and now I get my cardio from other forms of exercise.

Today, I ran a 10 minute mile. Oof.

I learned something I kind of already knew: Bicycle legs are not the same thing as runner legs. I can feel some muscles being used while running that don't get sufficiently exercised from my bicycle. Running is now a welcome edition to my exercise program.

Thread resurrection here I guess. In 2019 my fitness program looks quite different as well. Doing Crossfit and riding my MTB alot. Occasional road bike and running when necessary.

My favorite ways of cardio exercises in the order then I felt I got the best workout.

1)Running
2)Swimming
3)Bicycling

Due to an old rugby injury I had to drop running a bout 12 years ago.

My exercise program this year changed a little, unexpectedly.

I had a great winter building strength on the trainer, had really good stamina and power going into this season. I participated in a 60 mile gravel race in April. The weather was mid-30's and rainy instead of 50's and sunny like we were all expecting... I don't do well in cold. Combine that with a saddle that decided to drop while riding (I'm an idiot for not noticing) and my knee was wrecked. I took almost all of May and June off, eased back into riding, and now my work/personal life schedule is busy and I'm barely riding 2x a week on a good week. I'm barely at 1000 miles for the season, and it's already the back half of August. Oh well. I guess not everything happens the way you expect, right? The bright side is I was able to do a ton of hiking in May and June with my wife and the doggos, so it's not like I've stopped exercising, but I've been a lot slower than I intended.

As all NE Ohioans say, "this is a building year, there's always next year"

Hate running, love bicycling.

I used to exercise a lot and be in really good shape, but have any of you ever gone through a phase where you're super busy and overloaded at work, highly stressed, and when you get home you just don't feel like exercise. You feel like vegetating.

Years back I used to race mountain bikes. Done some triathlons and road races too. Seems like that's so far away now. I'm about 30 lbs overweight.

Right. I ride a bicycle every day... almost. If the weather is bad but not terrible, I'll run a few miles. If I haven't run for a couple months, when I do I can expect my legs to be a little sore the next day. I figure it's mainly because of higher peak loads when running. Cycling is a pretty smooth thing to the legs compared to running.

Yeah, cycling uses more muscles more evenly than running. I used to do both while racing crits professionally. Running was for high-intensity sprints and strength. Really helped sprints on the bike.

Decades later and having put on some pounds, I’m working it off with biking. Can burn off more calories/hr with cycling and it doesn’t hurt as badly and recovery is quicker.

It's because you're not doing that exercise often enough. As a demonstration, take a couple months off cycling, then go back to riding at the same power level and duration. You'll be sore.

IIRC you ride the same route every day on a bike? We talked about this a long time ago. If that's the case, you're stagnant in your workouts and they're not doing nearly as much for you as they can. Vary up the type and intensity of the ride. For example, make one day a climbing day, one day a steady output flat day, and one day a short fast day. Then take an easy recovery spin, then an off day for stretching and low intensity walking or something like that with a focus on hydration and nutrition. Off days are just as important as on days.

This will do a lot more for your metabolism, recovery, and power than just doing the same ride over and over and over again.

Where are you located, Winston-Salem area? Come out my way for some hills and mix up your rides.

Yeah, it's called periodization. If you do two of same ride in week, you missed out on different ride that would've been better for fitness & improvement than repeating ride you've already done.

Man, this is my life off and on all the time. Work, travel for work, work for work, kids, home, wife, life, etc etc etc. It saps everything I have sometimes. And it does get the better of me sometimes. Exercise I like, like riding singletrack helps so much to allow me to get some blood flowing when I don't want to workout.

It helps tremendously for me to have someone to do it with as well. I am 1000% more likely to workout if I have someone to do it with. It is one of the reasons travel is so hard for me with exercise - I get away from people exercise with and then there is no accountability.

I need to lose 25 lbs right now and it is coming off the slowest and hardest it ever has. At least cycling is fun lol.

I have been doing crossfit for 22 months. I love it, I still get sore but not like I use too.
I still bike from time to time too.
