Turn that junk off

So I pulled into my parking lot at work today, did my neutral dance, and keyed off. At that point I noticed something. When I key off, I tend to push down slightly into the keyhole. When I turn the key to the off position while pushing down, the key continues to turn beyond the off position (1/4 rotation, maybe?). Once it's beyond the off position, I can't pull the key out. What the heck is this? Google told me nothing, and since Google hold all human knowledge, I assume this has never ever happened before and my bike is specially built to do this. Is my bike a billion dollar prototype?

That is the lock area. If you turn your handle bars to the left about 1-2in before lock. The key will keep twisting to a point where it will come out and the bars will be locked to the left.

Have you read your Owner's Manual? Here's a snap-shot that should help.

Yeah, its steering lock. Its designed as a "theft deterrent"....but its completely useless other than annoying the thief slightly.

Jesse,

Your bike is broken and cannot be repaired. Please crate and ship to me for proper disposal. I will bill you for the disposal once I receive your bike. No need to thank me... I offer this service to all who don't read their owners manual.

I believe owner manuals are available for free download on the Kawasaki website.

Also, you don't need to do anything fancy to get it into neutral. If the bike is stopped and you are in second or first gear, it will not pass neutral. Just push it. It's called the "positive neutral finder" in the manual.

That said, you should leave it in 1st gear so that it isn't as easy to move.

I'd get in the habit of locking it every time. You never know when a co-worker is ready for a laugh and walks your bike behind the building or across the parking lot. Never happened to me, but it's a common prank where I work.
