SOL for slip-ons?
When I first got my ex 250 I really liked the look of the dual exhaust, but after some discussions with friends it's been decided that my bike sounds only slightly better than a lawnmower, but not as good as a chainsaw.
So back to the original point, am I now stuck between doing a full exhaust to get it to one pipe or paying double for two identical pipes, or is there an option in the price range that i could get a relatively decent slip on for? |

Are the four rivets still in the rear end of your mufflers? A common mod is to drill them out to make the pipes louder. Mine was that way when I got it, and it indeed sounded like a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine, especially when idling. I tapped the holes and put stainless bolts in, and I'm happy with the quiet, smooth sound now.

I was saying that if someone drilled out your rivets, I agree that sounds terrible, like a lawnmower, and that plugging the holes might help. I plugged the rivet holes a previous owner made in mine, and I'm very happy with the nice deep but quiet idle and low-noise high speed running.

The cheapest option I've found for slip-ons is what's offered by Blue Collar Bobbers. They have a kit for $185 that comes with two mufflers to replace the stock ones. There is a bit of work involved, but they have a video that guides you through the process.
I have this exhaust and it's definitely louder than stock. |

I'm guessing they're Emgo mufflers, possibly with adapters to fit the 250 pipes, but I could be wrong. Emgo has a pretty extensive line of inexpensive mufflers. Here is one example:

My wife's bike had the rear outlet drilled out. It was a 2" hole instead of the small outlet. It was louer and sounded ok

Yeah, many of these come from same factories that make brand-name stuff.
Problem is greedy U.S. importers. You can get stuff built to any specifications you want from downright crappy all the way to space-age alien-tech. Of course, they'll be a HUGE price-variation between those extremes. The importers specify as low-quality as possible for the lowest-cost as possible in order to maximize profits. That's the problem. Look at all the horrible replacement tune-up electronics in auto-parts stores (distributors, ignition-coils, etc.). If you don't get OEM from dealers, you're pretty much guaranteed part will fail in less than 1-yr. I used to have custom EFI systems for Porsches made in NZ. Then moved production to China and was surprised at how large of variations there can be. It was very tempting to push quality to bottom and make 10x as much profit as sourcing the parts from NZ... I probably wouldn't have been able to get away with it for long. So, mid-range specs for 2x higher profits as NZ was fine with me. One of my friends supplies high-end home-theatre equipment. We're talking installations that cost more than actual movie theatres you buy tickets to go to. His stuff is top-notch, highest specs, 10-yr warranties. Guess where it's made? That's right, China! |

Wanting the EX250 to sound better (better, as in "like other motorcycles, usually ones with more cylinders) is an old problem, and there is no solution.
I'm not saying you can't make the EX250 louder, you can make it really loud if you want to, but that's not going to change the basic "musical note" that a parallel two cylinder engine with a 180 degree crankshaft makes. Truth is, above about 7,000 RPM the EX250 sounds great because at that frequency the human ear can no longer distinguish the actual sound of the piston's firing order. At high RPMs the EX250 sounds like any other "flat plane" crankshaft engine (and they all sound very good). Below about 7,000 you're able to hear the actual firing order of the engine. The EX250's parallel twin flat plane crankshaft engine fires its cylinders only 180 degrees apart then there's nothing for the next 540 degrees of crankshaft rotation. That close firing followed by a long gap is what sounds bad to the ear. It sounds kind of "farty", |
