Muffler Maintenance?

I just found out all all(most) aftermarket exhaust mufflers require periodic maintenance, any of you guys drilled out the rivets to change the blanket and steel wool? Do you actually notice a drop in HP/Power over time?

The packing is there to make the muffler quiet. When the packing goes the pipe gets much louder. Aftermarket exhausts usually get trashed long before the muffler needs repacking. Some mufflers use screws, others use pop-rivets to hold the core in. It's not hard to remove the core but drilling out pop-rivets can be a pain.

You can buy generic muffler packing from most cycle accessory stores. Quality exhaust manufacturers such as Muzzy will sell a repack kit that includes pre-cut packing (sometimes with a new core) and new pop-rivets if needed. Most will also offer a re-packing service where you mail your muffler to them to be repacked.
