idle issue
having issues with my 01. starts fine and idles fine until i ride. the rpm's dont seem, to want to come down from 5k as i have the clutch engaged or in neutral until i adjust the idle screw. then i have to turn it a 1/4 turn to restart. if i ride it again i have to turn it a turn or so down then have to turn it a turn back again. doesnt seem to have anything hung up on my cables.
the other thing i have an issue with is it is slow to drop rpm after coming off the throttle. takes about 10 seconds to come down to 1500rpm's. I did pull the carbs apart to clean the float bowls and a quick spray down when my petcock needed rebuilt. outside of that it runs great with no stumble |

That happens when the engine sucks extra air from some leak between the intake valve and the carburetor.

Yes, it could be a crack on a vacuum hose.
Spray some carburetor cleaner over the area while the engine is idling. Any change in rpms' should indicate where the leak is at.

When the intake valves open, the piston is going down, creating vacuum to suck a mix of air and gasoline from the carburetor.
Any leak in between will cause excess of air being introduced into the cylinder.

Ah, thank you. I wonder if this may have something to do with my petcock vacuum hose...

So, I discovered that my petcock vacuum fitting is loose... Meaning the little piece of brass tubing comes out pretty freely...I cannot seem to get it out of the hose (gunked up pretty bad).
Could this fitting not...fitting...properly cause the above idling issues as well? Any tips for getting it to fit air tight again? Thanks!!! Fit! lol |

Yes, air can leak in around the brass. Try the carb cleaner trick at idle to see if the rpms raise. That would be a give away.

fixed it. tried the carb cleaner trick and nothing changed. no loose rubbers. wasnt sure about vacuum lines on the carbs since the pictures i took some how didnt take. anyway dropped the carbs off used a youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgt3LQKIwVg to figure out i had frogged the first vac line that bridges the two carbs together with the larger line that goes in the center high location. after running new lines and putting them in the right spot i have great response on the throttle. thx for suggesting vac leak.
