11/30:
12:30pm - Jon is looking better today and acting more relaxed. This morning, the nurses and Lori said he pointed to his beard and said he wanted it to go away. He again said he was "full" after he received his lunch via feeding tube. He's been pointing more with his right hand to people that are talking to him: he did that with Lori and me this afternoon.

Wish I actually got to spend time in Dallas, but was just waiting for an hour at the airport. Great news on the recovery. I also had to laugh at the cartoon thing.

8:00pm - Jon said alot of clear words this evening, some I've only heard for the first time:

"Owl" - I was wearing a shirt with a drawing with an owl and asked him if he could tell me what animal he saw

"Built to Spill" - I asked him what kind of music he would like to listen to on my ipod

"My head" - When I asked him where he was feeling pain

"Feels good" - When I rubbed his hair after he said his head hurt

"Football" - When Lori handed him one of the small NERF footballs he squeezes on to

"I don't know" - When he doesn't have an answer

"What's that" - When he doesn't know

"Whatcha doing" - When he's asking how you are

"I love you" - sometimes on his own or in reply

"Why are you crying" - When I cry

"I can't" - When we ask him to move his left hand

"OK" - This interchanges with "Yeah"

I've also seen him nod his head in response to a yes. Also noticed that he has started moving his left leg slightly (he hasn't before) and giving a thumbs up sign with his right hand. He became a little more agitated tonight and upset over his uncomfortableness. He will receive a scan over his entire body tomorrow to determine and locate the infection that is causing his high temperature.

Don, I think that`s a very real possibility---a lot sooner than we think. Checked in with my sister and she feels the "Owl recognition" is a benchmark--a very good sign. She is reasonably sure that his therapists are using picture cards for object recognition. He will, I would expect, be reading magazines very soon. When he does that---she suggests magazines with funny cartoons, etc. The idea is to get him laughing---another benchmark. Sat. AM cartoons on the TV are also good.

12:30 pm-Jon's team of doctors, nurses, & therapists held their conference with Lori today. The whole team was in good spirits and very positive about his current state and the progress he has made. Jon can now begin receiving little amounts of water and ice chips...which he has been requesting frequently! His discharge date from Baylor to his next rehabilitation is set for December 22nd. Lori has an appointment to visit Pate Rehabilitation tomorrow, but the family has not yet decided where Jon will be transferred to next.

11:00 am-Jon just returned from the medical side of Baylor where he received the procedure that scans his whole body to locate/determine where his infection is coming from. The occupational therapist wrapped and taped a pillow around Jon's left arm as a gradual aide to his spasticity. This is just temporary support before they decide to put on splints which will help his arm become less rigid and more flexible.

sorry, it's been a few days. jon's retna isn't torn but does have a pocket behind it. should heal on it's own. they put the second cast on his right arm to lower it. works hard in therapy because he wants to go home. soon jon soon

jon will be off the antibiotics tomorrow. no more pulling out the iv. working hard in therapy, standing everyday with help. he will need to be in a chair for awhile due to the ho in his knees. he cannot bend them. this will need surgery in about a year. mentally he is confused but handling this very well. finally used to the new room...

jon got the trach taken out yesterday which means he is breathing and swallowing well. they are also done with the antibiotics so the i.v. is also out. the only things left is the feeding tube. he is eating lunch but not eating enough to gain weight. hopefully this won't be much longer.

Nadine Diaz You count change better than me!!!! Watching your therapy sessions reminds me of watching Ayden succeed at something. My throat swells with pride and happiness! I also love that even when you are having a not so good day, you are still the sweetest man I have ever known. I can't even tell people your progress on a day ...to day basis anymore because everyday you amaze us. Your progression is outstanding. I know in my heart that you will be serene and happy in such a short time. You are almost there, almost there, bud. Ayden and I love you! See you tomorrow.

Lori Broom hello, jonathan is still progressing. they put a cast on his right arm today to start bringing it down. not sure if they will be re=casting the left arm. bir had a christmas party today for the patients. it was really nice. jon seemed to enjoy it but then he got upset so i brought him back up nto the room. he has... been having a hard time realizing he cannot go x-mas shopping etc. doing my best to let him know he can't. will let you know more tomorrow about the move on tuesday...

jonathan is doing good. he works really hard in therapy to take steps on his own. this is very painful for him due to the HO in his knees and thigh. he is now at a cognitive level 6. he will be moving to centre for neuro skills in irving on tuesday. i will post the address and directions monday. they do require a photo id and your name on a list to visit at the apartments. very safe and secure out there.

Kim, Thanks for keeping the ninjette family in the loop. It is very encouraging that Jon has moved to Level VI. If my memory serves me right, he should progress at a good rate until he reaches Level VIII. At that point, patients tend to plateau for a period---this is where a person specializing in helping Jon regain his cognitive skills comes in. From there on, things should go well. Jon is very fortunate to have a caring and supportive family in his corner. From reading this thread from the beginning to now---his wife and children have played a pivotal role in his progress. My opinion is that Jon`s supportive family and the support of his friends is as important in his recovery as his top notch medical team. As the Level of Cognition numbers go up, support from family and friends will also increase in importance. Level VI is a great Christmas present, for sure.

Lori Broom today was great. david and dusty were here and nadine brought ayden up to see papa for his birthday. steve and carl came by and tyler and beth w/kids came over too. very busy here today. jon did pretty good but decided there was to many people. he got a bit over stimulated but calmed down easy. he is getting x-r...ays and a doppler on his arm right now. will post tomorrow what they say. talk with ya'll soon

jon is getting x-rays on his arm right now. they are checking for a blood clot. not sure what the bump is from but will know shortly. today is jon's dads birthday so david and dusty came up to be with jon. they will be back christmas. will report on the x-rays tomorrow.

At the price of some of the verbal input software it might be a good thing for him http://www.nuance.com/naturallyspeaking/ Unfortunately it doesn't look like it runs on a Mac and I'm not to sure that the included speech to text engine in the Macs is really up to the task of surfing and typing. I know they have something, but not sure how well it works. They do list an iphone app, he might have one of those he could use.
