Power Outlet from (front) Accessory Wires

I want to add a cigarette lighter/power outlet to my pregen so that I can connect to GPS/camera/phone. I've located the accessory wires in the front, but have a question regarding actually connecting to them to the cigarette lighter. Has anybody done that? Do I need to strip the wires (on the cigarette lighter assembly), stick 'em into the accessory wires and then tighten up with pliers? Or, is there a better way?

There are loads of videos on YouTube about installing a cigarette lighter/power socket and there's good documentation on the Ninjette wiki. But, I haven't found anything that shows the actual connection to the accessory wires themselves.

I just connected my battery tender cable to the battery permanently, ran the wire out the side, and put a SAE to USB like this one on it. Routed a 6 foot USB extension to the instrument panel.

Haven't tried running a hub with multiple devices.

NOt sure what the 'accessory wires' in the front of a pregen look like. but this is how I splice into existing auto wires.

I'm just interested in connecting to the accessory wires at the front (inside the fairings just below the clip-ons ... next to the forks).

It'll be pretty simple to just stick the wires from the cigarette lighter into the accessory wires, and then tighten up with pliers. I just wanted to be sure that there wasn't an EVEN easier way. For example, maybe there are some special connectors that plug directly into the accessory wires. I haven't seen anything that says that there are such connectors, but maybe that's because it's so elementary that any 6-year old would already know that.

:-)

If they are bullet connectors then yes, you can buy them, crimp them to your lighter socket and then simply plug it in.

Well, once more I learned something new on ninjette.org. I'd never heard of bullet connectors. I'd seen them lots of times, but didn't know what they were called. The accessory wires are indeed bullet connectors. Well, I suppose that they're double bullet connectors really. Female I'm assuming. So, I guess that I need to find double male bullet connectors, and they should just slot together like ... well ... male and female thingys.

You got the idea. You can buy packs of male or female connectors, crimp them to your wires then plug it in.

I'm a little late (been at the cottage) but the connectors on my pregen are female spade connectors. The little round loops at the edges are to make it easier for the male to find the slot, not for tiny bullet connectors. I got yellow male connectors to wire my usb socket. Blue ones would probably be alright you just might have trouble getting your lighter socket wires to fit into the blue male terminals.

Just a heads up for anyone interested in buying a SAE to USB. These are on for $19.99 at Alaska Leather http://www.alaskaleatheronline.com/s...Adapter/Detail

I originally had a cigarette lighter plug zip tied to my dash, but it turned out that most of the stuff I was plugging into it was converting it to USB and then charging it. So I bought a USB cigarette lighter charger and hot wired that into the dash lights. There are accessory wires there, but they are hot all the time and the little Ninja battery can't handle something being left plugged in. The USB charger has two ports and works great. I had to use a little bondo, but I made it stick to the top of the dash and so far its worked flawlessly. It also cuts off when the bike is not running.

Unless you have a good reason not to, I recommend tapping the dash lights rather than the accessory wires.

I'm still looking into this. I've now discovered that there are three types of (male) bullet connectors - red, blue and yellow. There may be more, but these are the three that keep coming up when I do searches. Red are sized 0.4mm-1mm, blue are 1.1mm-2.6mm and yellow are 2.5mm to 6.5mm.

But, what do those numbers mean? The end of a bullet connector looks pretty rigid to me. I can't see how it could fit anywhere from 2.5mm to 6.5mm ... that's a HUGE range.

I haven't been able to measure the female terminals of the accessory wires and can't find any reference to how big they are. When I look at them, I would guess that they're somewhere between 3mm and 4mm.

So, can anybody tell me what size/colour of make bullet connectors will fit the female accessory wires on a pre-gen?

I guess that I could buy a (100x) count of the three different types and see which fit, but that seems wasteful (and would cost me £12).

Thanks!

The pregen doesn't use bullet connectors. It uses large spade connectors. At least the US version does.

What do you plan on plugging into the cigarette lighter jack?

Sorry, I thought that those were bullet connectors - or at least double bullet connectors. I guess that those must be called spade connectors.

You want a male spade connector. They are quite large so I'm guessing you want the yellow ones.

I just went and looked again. They're definitely not spade connectors. They're side-by-side female bullet connectors. I've got a '01 US version bike. Does anybody know the correct size of connector to plug into the accessory wires?

Its definitely a big spade connector. Probably a yellow or bigger. Does this female spade connector look more like it?

Just get the biggest made spade connector you can find and shove it in. If its too loose, then use a pair of pliers to crimp it a little and try again until the connector fits snug.

I've attached a photo of the accessory wires. Or at least, I hope that I have. They don't look like any spade connectors that I've been able to find online.

I suppose you could shove a bullet connector in there, but I used a big spade connector with no problems. It may actually be a dual style connector that takes both kinds.

i have rigged other connectors to fit those, always regretted it cuz they come unpluged every few 100 miles. best thing to do is to cut and recrimp with your desired connectors. it makes things 100 times easier in the long run and only takes 5 mins.

Hi Roger,

a bit late to this but I think those numbers would be the range of wire sizes that can safely be crimped? e.g. 0.4mm^2 to 1mm^2 cables should use red connectors. I would think you can get red connectors in a variety of actual female and male connectors, even different diameter bullet sizes but the red indicates the *wire* dimensions not the bullet dimensions I believe.

Seems like they are double bullet connectors rather than spade. However, I just used a spade connector and it worked. Those bullet connectors are sold pretty much everywhere. Probably available at Radio Shack, Home Depot or an auto parts place.
