2013 East Coast Ninja Rally

So for the past 2 years a couple of people across different boards have been meeting up and having a ninja rally. 2011 was at The Dragon, 2012 was in Asheville NC.

This year we have decided on West Virginia, but have not marked down a specific location or date (sometime during summer to accomodate school). We are thinking either Roanoke, or Marion WV. If anyone is interested in attending please post here, so we can get some more things hashed out.

I was hoping to kind of get a theme for this year, a "motto" per say, and get some T-shirts printed up. If anyone would be interested in that route we can do that do.

I really want to get more people together, the past 2 years we have had 10-14 people show up, 1 rode all the way from Colorado, and have 4-5 come from the DC area. It has been a blast getting to know everyone and look forward to it. I would love to make it eventually as large as the Concours rally held every year.

Any input, suggestions is highly recommended, and thank you for your time.

Hmm also interested in this, but as the Joe above me also said, would depend on date and my financial state at the time.

I guess I need some info - what kind of riding do you want? Some shorter trips; an all day trip? Don't have to worry about twisties, we have lots of those. There are several great routes with good roads, scenery, fewer cars...Do you want to try to hit one of the motorcycle rallies too?

Yes to all! The rally is only going to be about 3 days, usually from thurs to sat/sun. I would like to make it a whole week, but not sure if others would like too.

Some are hoping it is in the summer to account for kids and school. Early august would be pretty good date as well though.

You come down to the dragon, let me know, I am about an hour away and can show ya some roads .

Simon, we could hook up in NC and ride over together if the schedule works out. Bunch of good roads off the Blue Ridge Parkway to explore on the way.

You a "camper" or do you do motels?

Stay in touch.

Cheap hotel or do you like your creature comforts.
I'm more of a cheap campsite guy...
There's a couple places along the Parkway where you can take your pick.
Camping on the Parkway is super cheap. As a "senior" campsites are $8buck a night. No showers though... except at the Pisgah Campsite.

we would like to camp, but looking at the maps there doesnt seem to be many lakes to really camp at and i figured after the long days riding in the august heat we need to cool off somehow so we are leaning to motels.
me and my cousin made a trip to watkins glen this past summer and were dying in the heat but thats not even far south, not so bad while riding but still cookin. once we arrived we were told no one swims in the lake and we couldnt find a good way in. we ended up pool hopping a motel before we found an easy way into the lake so it worked out

I'd be interested to know which parts of WV you'd like to see/ride. I personally prefer north/central, but that's just my preference. As long as you stay out of the cities: Wheeling, Parkersburg, Huntington, Morgantown, Charleston - you can get a motel that shouldn't cost a lot. Plenty of camping too, if that's how you want to go. Anyhow - my offer to help is still out there, but I need to know which part of the state you want to ride. Just as an FYI - the Mountainfest Motorcycle Rally is July 24-28. The state of WV has a site just for motorcycles with many rides listed: www.wvmountainrider.com. The Mountainfest site still has the info from last year. That site is www.wvmountainfest.com.

Hellz yeah. Rode Rt. 50 from one edge of WV to the other on my way to IN this past spring. Great sections. Here are a couple of pics from that ride.

Ah yes... "the George Wahsington Highway". A lot of roads named after the early presidents and civil war generals are very interesting rides.

Looking on Google maps, it appears like there's some good dual sport riding (my next bike will be dual sport) up in the Eastern part of the state, starting there (MD,VA, WV & PN) and maybe moving west across 50 (or starting in the west and moving East)???? 2,3 or 4 nights at different places.

I don't think you want to get west of I-79. The roads pretty much flatten out and straighten out (for WV). Some of the best roads: Rt. 50 from MD line west to Grafton; Rt. 72 from Rt 7 to Rt 32 to Rt 55; Rt 33 south to Rt 28, the WV Scenic Highway (Rt 150). Rt 20 south from Buckhannon to Webster Springs; from Webster Springs either south on Rt. 20 to 55 to the Scenic Highway or east on Rt. 15 to Rt 55 south to 66 east. Anyway, a lot of the better riding is in the area in and around the Monongahela National Forest. There a few ways to either make these routes shorter loops or one REALLY long 1-day ride. We did the 1-day ride once and we were on the bikes for about 12 hours or so with limited stops.

And of course there are some good roads in MD and Va by the looks of it. Hope this works out. I'd like to spend a little time up there this summer... , riding, eating and making new friends. May even get to do some hiking

Come on up anytime Old Guy. I'm on the MD side, but DC area, so it's only a couple hours to Shenandoah for me, and I ride all the free time I've got. I'm hoping that I'll be able to swing finances to write full-time this summer, so my schedule will be very open. Just don't tell my wife that 'writing' sometimes means 'riding'.

Ninjaedit: Oh yeah, and I also applied for a two-week seminar/conference in June at Wake Forest University. If I get that, I'll def. ride down and hit the twisties at least a few times/week.

Here's another of the roads I suggested...it's easier for me to post a few videos to give you an idea of the possible rides. I've ridden this one a couple of times and some of the curves still make me nervous - they are sharper than they look.

Travis,

Good luck with the writing job. Hopethat works

i've not done the Skyline Drive yet and that's a definate for this year... hopefully midweek sometime before everyone starts 'Summer Vacation'. Well have to wait and see. If you do get to WF we'll hook up for sure. NC-66 and "Squirrel Spur Road", both just north of WS (sq spur drops down off the BRP someplace around mile186), are calling. There's also the Jeff Davis Highway and then if you come further west there a bunch of good twisties on both sides of the parkway.

I like the sound of that "take over". I've always wanted to "take over" but never had the chance....

By the way... anyone thinking of doing a double header this summer. I' headed to Lake George NY for Americade... 1st week of June... look for the Americade heading in this section.
