GoPro Wide or Standard?

My girlfriend is hooking me up with a gopro setup, but i can't decide if i want the wide angle lens or the standard. at first i thought the standard was the answer, but i can't decide.

the wide angle distorts things and makes all the other bikes on the track seem far away, but it will also allow you to see really close racing better. when you're swapping places with someone on the track you'll only be able to see them when they're right in front of the camera with the standard lens. Richards video is a good example of this. on the start theres a lot of stuff going on that the camera misses, but it records the action in front of him well later on in the race.

here is a wide angle. notice how much more of the close, side by side action it gets that the standard would miss

if there isn't a lot of action happening close by, then everything looks so far away... like this video of me on the track

the wide angle also allows you to do some creative stuff like this as well...

i'm also probably going to use this out on the trails on the dirtbike and stuff too... the wide is better for that i'm sure.

any opinions on which way i should go with this?

The wide angle captures just look better overall, IMO, and the standard seems more like a narrow webcam feed. Besides, you don't plan on being that far behind anyone do you?

i also have to agree on wide because the action on the side of you is much more entertaining, the guy in front of you, yeah, he is in front of you! that action has already passed, unless you're going to pass him up, if he does look like he is that much further away it will look like you overtook him very quickly =]

Bottom line from me, standard lens if you're going to capture video for someone else following them, if it is for you, id say wide is better. Maybe I am biased because I think the quality of the camera of the wide angle lens is better, if it is the same camera, go for the wide!

hopefully this helped a bit.

If you put the wide lens cam on your tank, you can probably catch your hands too.
