I'm too old to try it and being retired I'm never in a hurry. Hell, I won't even ride with another bike side by side, I want ALLLL the road. I'm sure you're sensible when lane splitting. You made mention of being sandwiched between two cars. That's why I always hug the center line riding and at a stop - I might have an escape route around the car in front of me.

People usually only pass on the right because some *** is slowboating in the left lane. It's not only lanesplitters, I pass on the right here all the time in my car because morons poke along in the left lane.

Oregon must be like where I used to live - New Jersey. In NJ there seems to always be some blue hair in the far left lane.

I actually ride with a club in "formation" somewhat frequently so riding near another bike doesn't phase me at all. Even when it's a couple of us, two or three bikes, we ride in the same formation. Solo, I'm pretty good at "defending" my space when I want to. And the rest of the time, I'm in "ghost" mode. I'll be past you before you know I'm there.

I assume I'm invisible, and that someone is likely to take my space if given any opportunity, so stay out of the danger zone as often as I can.

I'm going to use this if I ever get pulled over by the police.

Or, you can bungee a lunch box to your seat and tell him you're late for work. One day in Rochester, N.Y. a friend of mine and myself were feeling frisky and were blasting along Route 104 at about 80 M.P.H. on our Kaw 500 triples and got pulled over. The cop checked our paperwork and then asked us if we were on our way to work and almost in unison we said "Yes". We were about 1/2 a mile from a Xerox Corp. manufacturing facility (no lunch boxes). He handed us back our paperwork and told us to slow down. Lucky day.

Good one! Here in Michigan the cop would remind me that since I'm a guy the whole world is my urinal and point to the ditch.

They'd encourage you to pee in public? Wow. Here you'd get arrested! LOL! Or at least hassled.

One of my friends got a $150 ticket for public-urination on State St. in S.B. They really are pretty uptight there, with all the blue-hairs and all.

If the front is bouncing and sliding while leaned, and I have time to think, I can ride it out.

I've learned to not ride 1st-lap out as fast as last-lap from previous session... Even with tyre-warmers, they cool off in the couple of minutes it takes to roll out to hot-pit and wait for start.

I learned not to ride every day of a 4 day Holiday weekend During the 4th of July without the proper rest. no matter how young or old you are. Rode out to Hollister one day... Santa Cruz Mtns, then over to the SF Bay area.

I forgot I dropped my bike Twice at the end of the 4 days of rides. It started with shade on a wet road when the sun did not dry the road in a turn. I slid into the dirt. Ruined the ride on the 2nd drop...

I'll have to keep that in mind! I signed up for 4-days in a row at Thunderhill Raceway next weekend. I think I'll start with taking one afternoon session off.

Not to allow the red mist to cloud my judgement, to be more prepared before the race so I don't have to go back then start from pit row, to brake a little extra if your line is destroyed because you're passing someone, to fix your brakes first after a crash so you don't miss your other race

lessons of the day, really bummed I missed my 2nd race of the day. Felt worse about that than crashing out of the first race of the day

I learned not to ever let anyone ride as a passenger with me. I dated a guy once who gave a guy a ride home from his brothers party to prevent a fight, (5 minutes away) and the guy passed out on the back of the bike during a turn and didn't lean. It caused him to go off the road and a guide wire for a light pole took his leg off above the knee as he went by. He passed away a few years ago from diabetes.

I don't think I will ever trust anyone enough to let them ride on the back of a bike with me after that.

Sweet Jesus that's a sad story. I guess it's don't drink and drive or drink and ride - at least on a motorcycle.

That's terrible! I wouldn't give a stranger a ride, but if I know the person (and like them) I will, provided they haven't been drinking and aren't falling asleep.

Seems reasonable. I can't think of any situation when I'd rather slide than have at least some control over the bike. When I crashed, I wasn't thinking about how to crash, though it occurred to me that it was a possibility. I was mostly concerned with keeping control as long as I could, and slowing down as much as I could, hoping to come to a controlled stop even though that would be on the dirt shoulder.
