Plastic Rivet

Hey everyone. Looking for some help. Can anyone tell me the sizes of the plastic push in rivets for the bottom part of the fairings? Thanks!

If this isn't in a sticky/faq somewhere I'd be surprised.

I'm going to look up the sizes/etc right now and try and find some part numbers because all my plastic connectors are broken/lost/non-existent from PO.

edit....

So the well nuts are #92210-0498 (5mm, qty listed = ten, but from the looks of it you might need a few more.)

The smaller push-type rivets that hold the (colored) fairings to the front upper/under/black cowling are #92039-0060 and qty listed = 6, which is indeed correct.

And the three push-type rivets you need to hold the two (colored) fairings together along the bottom are #92039-0014. Qty listed = 3.

Then there are the silver socket head screws/washers that hold everything together but you can look those up for yourself because there are different lengths.

It's all in the sticky at the top of this tech-talk section. Go to part diagrams and it will link you to kawasaki part schematics.

Does anyone know where to get these oem parts for cheap?

I just totalled up 68 dollars for a few tiny screws and push fit connectors... Outrageous.

4 dollars for a single well-nut? There must be a better way. Unfortunately no junkyards around...

Nuts and bolts, Ace, Home depot, Lowes, or other such home place.

Well nuts, check a bike store for windshield bolt kit. That's where I got my replacements.

OEM part wise, partzilla.com is pretty good. Their shipping used to be better for under $10 orders, but now not so much, so you would want to order as much as you could in one order so you don't spend so much on shipping.

You can generally call a company and explain how you don't need the parts right away and they can be shipped via USPS for much cheaper than the pre-calculated UPS/fedex rates posted up based on the shipping algorithym.

I'll look into the part numbers when I have them in front of me. Thanks. 68 bucks for 9 rivets, two screws, four washers, and two clips wasn't looking very agreeable on my budget.

Thanks dude.

I do not know the sizes off the top of my head, but http://www.clipsandfasteners.com/ is a great site to go to for cheap fasteners.

Thanks guys, partzilla ended up being HALF of what all the other OEM part places wanted to charge.

Good tip.

Curious, did you try calling to see if they would do a cheaper USPS shipping? I may have to try that the next time I order from them.

For future reference, you really don't need to get OEM for things like nylon rivets and well nuts. They're just standard parts and they're not super special. Figure out the size of the thing you need an buy a cheaper large pack of them rather than getting ripped off by an OEM parts dealer or a dealership. Getting the larger pack also gives you the benefit of having extra parts lying around if you need them later.

Actually, the rivets that connect the two side fairings at the bottom are in use. It's those smaller rivets that connect the fairings to the black plastic trim that are annoying. I use zip ties there

Doesn't cutting them off and replacing them in order to take apart the bike get old?

Absolutely...but I found removing the rivets much more annoying. They would never come off as easily as their big brothers at the bottom of the bike.

@rasta are you talking about the small rivets that attach the radiator cowl to the lower fairings? Look like this...

All you need to do is use the small hex key you used on the little bolts to push in on the center of the rivet. It pops in once and the whole thing comes out easily. To reinsert, you just pushthe center part back out (to resemble the above pic), put it back in the holes of the cowling, and push the center into its locked position flush with the rest.

Hmm.....I do admit I hadn't thought about using a hex key to push it out. I tried using my finger, which was not effective . Maybe I'll get some more of those rivets....after I run out of the zip ties

Well there's your problem. Using a hex key to push in the center really makes it easy.

In. Push it in.

Have to admit I actually read that trick from the removing the fairings diy here. Before that I was using a small screw driver to pry the stupid things off. Still hate the lower larger rivets with a passion. One day I am just going to Velcro the crap out of the bottom and leave the rivets out.

Yeah, it'll push it into the outer sleeve, somehow releasing the tension holding it in place, then you can simply pull it out.

Partzilla for the plastic fairing rivets

Just ordered from Partzilla - very quick and easy. Recommend/+1 on whoever mentioned them.

Another source of odd OEM replacement fasteners is your local NAPA store.

Mine has a display with about a hundred different styles of reusable plastic rivets and other OEM style fasteners.

There's no system to match them by number, so you need to bring in what you have and do your best to find the match.

There's nothing motorcycle-specific or brand-specific about any of this stuff.

The well nuts are M5. Google that and you'll find dozens of sources, from Amazon to ebay.

Plastic rivets exist to hold two panels together. That's it. All that matters is the diameter of the hole. It doesn't have to match the OEM piece. It doesn't even have to be a plastic push rivet at all. Use your imagination and think of what you're trying to accomplish.

Auto parts stores are a good source for the plastic bits.
