Starts fine 1st time but won't start after

i have an 06 250 with around 6k miles
it starts up fine when its cold, like first ride of the day
but if i shut it off and try to start it again 5 minutes later it won't and takes a lot of attempts
what should i check out first?
i have seen carb cleaning mentioned a lot but more for a bike not starting at all, when it does start it runs great.

also when it does start the 2nd time if i push the gas it stutters/stumbles and dies if i let the choke off

yeah like when i drove it home
i turned the choke up and let it idle for like a minute or 2

then turned it off and rode it home just fine
when to start it again once i got home like 5 minutes later to show someone and it wouldn't start, cranked for like 3 minutes then it finally started

are you using the choke to start it when it's warm or are you trying to start it w/o any choke?

once you do get it started, does it idle nice and even or is it an erratic type of idle? what is you idle rpm set to once it's warmed up?

some bike history... has it always done this... is the bike new to you... how long has the gas been in the tank... anything you think would help would be appreciated.

bike is new to me
it has been dropped by original owner
not sure how long the gas has been in the tank
previous owner told me that sometimes you have to start it from reserve

when i rode it home after getting it to start it idled and ran perfectly. at stop signs and red lights it idled with no problems with the choke off. i believe the RPMs were at 2k but i'll have to check again

haven't had another chance to actually ride it since i don't have my license yet

she told me a local shop had just adjusted the valves, i know of the shop but didn't call to confirm or anything

my battery tender just got here and i just hooked it up. the light was solid red meaning its charging so i'm going to let it sit on there for a while and check it out later this evening to see if it solves the problem. i'll report back then

thank you for the help so far

I would recommend that you add some fuel cleaner to the tank. I like Seafoam... it sometimes works wonders in cleaning up gunked up jets w/o having to open the carbs up.

I would also call the shop to confirm that the valves were indeed adjusted. At your mileage, you are due, if it's not been done and there have been cases of improper idling when warm due to out of spec valves. If you can confirm they were done (paper records would be great, if they will give you a copy), then you can cross valves off the possible causes of your problem.

A good, strong, fully charged battery is always a plus when having starting problems. How old is the battery? make sure the battery terminal connections are tight, too.

i've used seafoam before on my car but never on a bike

just pour it in the gas tank then run through a tank of gas?

do i need to change the oil afterwards?

i'm going to give the shop a call on monday and see if they can pull anything up

just add it to the gas according to the mixing directions on the can (1 oz/gal???)... no need to change the oil afterward.

the idle is at around 2500-3000 right now and drops when i pull the clutch in

set the idle to about 1500 when the bike is fully warmed and in neutral. kinda weird that it drops when you pull in the clutch lever...

well i think i goof'd haha
today i tried to start it without giving it gas aka not touching the accelerator and it started up fine after driving it.
then i thought hmm maybe i'm not supposed to touch the accelerator when first trying to turn it on. kept trying this new found method and the bike starts up every time lol

so i think the only problem was 1st time bike user error
but i did buy from b-12 and sprayed it in the gas tank
adjusted the idle today to 1500 and it runs great
and i bought the battery charger so i guess some good came out of this
