New-Old Tach

After my first track season this year using a stock gauge cluster, I decided to make a change to a much easier to read tachometer. Using an idea from a friend’s bike, I started my own project. I didn’t want to spend the money on a Koso gauge (though I was tempted), I opted instead to replace my small Nex-Gen 2.625” diameter tach with a first-gen unit.

My donor gauge came from a busted up First Gen dash that I sourced on Ebay ($25.00). This tach measures 3.125”. Though only a half inch larger in diameter, it seems much bigger than the original.

I would be removing the stock cluster and plastic cowling that surrounds the dash. Going for a much cleaner look to this track-only bike. The new “dash” would be built from a gray ABS plastic electronics project box, 12v LED lights, aluminum gauge bezel, plastic cup and clear plastic sheet. Half-inch aluminum bar for brackets.
The box was $9.00 and the lights were about $4.00. The cup was free and the plastic that I used for the lens came from a poster frame I had laying around.
The plastic box measures 4.7"x4.7"x2.4" and the gauge just fits as far as depth is concerned. It is fastened from the back side using two OEM screws.

The box is secured to the fairing stay with a couple of aluminum brackets.
I also back-lit the tach using an existing bulb from the harness, so easy to see in the dark...not that I ride this bike in the dark.

Wiring harness used was my original, as the first-gen is a different plug, so was not going to match up.

That's very cool, great work

I'm a fan of the PreGen instrument layout, it seems more user friendly too me.
