hunter s. thompson's motorcycle adventures

if you like motorcycles and can appreciate some great writing check this out.. i gained an interesting perspective about motorcycles after reading this. its hunter s. thompson's "song of the sausage creature" essay. he examines the fascinating, insane mentality of the motorcyclist. its not terribly long

I LOVE this piece (I'm also fond of that bike haha). His writing style is so off-kilter it's mind blowing. Fantastic!

I read that "review" a while ago. I found it while I was reading up on motorcycles, before I settled on buying the ninjette.

The Good Doctor Gonzo's first book was "Hells Angels". It was the first book I read cover to cover way back when I was 13 or 14 on a trip to Africa.

I just finished that a couple of days ago and it was excellent. I hadn't really read any of Thompson's writing beyond random magazine articles and columns but will check out his other books. I grew up in Oakland and Richmond and the Bay Area from 40 years ago he describes is completely different from the way it is today.

Zim, be careful reading Thompson's books. It may cause serious delusions from Wild Turkey and various ingested drugs.

That's my favorite of his works as well. I've read it over a few times, even recited it drunk at a party once.

Here's a copy of the original Hells Angels article from The Nation that turned into the book:

Hunter got the shiiite kicked out of him and pissed on while hangin out with the "Angels" but it started him on the road to a long success. Maybe that's why he got into guns so much (which eventually ended his career).

I only was in his presence one (while doing time at UMASS) but it was unforgetable.

I believe Anthony Bourdain got his style from the Doctor.

Hunter Thompson is a tragic figure in American Literature. He was not as prolific as Kerouac or Kesey, but does have a place in literature. His self inflicted demise was a waste of some real talent we will never experience. I guess the same could be said of Hemingway who was prolific, talented, and is missed greatly.

I've read somewhere that both Thompson and Hemingway suffered literary quality decline towards the end, which might have contributed to their demise.

Interesting read as is most of Thompson's stuff. CC have you ever talked with any Angels members? I've seen a few riding around my neck of the woods along with Warlocks.

I've talked to two in my lifetime. Once because someone screwed them and unfortunately I knew the guy, but I wasn't involved. The other time was even worse. Can't really explain the facts but he was supposed to kill me but we ended up as friends. Had one other experience with a bike gang, in East Boston. I really didn't like being around any of them and try to stay as far away from that environment as I can.

Anthony, You are right. Both suffered a "Literary Slump" and appearantly did not have the patience to ride it out. In Hemingway`s case, it was that, coupled with a major depression that caused his demise. It is rumored that in Thompson`s case, the "literary slump" coupled with a copious ingestion of alcohol and drugs caused him to take his life. In both cases, a real tragedy.
