Oil leak around shifter seal.
OK, I am looking at purchasing a 2006 Ninjette for my daughter for her 16th birthday. She is only 12 right now, but there are some mods I want to make to the bike and should be able to get those done in 3 years. Plus it is a smoking deal.
I have not personally inspected the bike, but the seller says it is in perfect condition except for a small oil leak around the shifter lever. I am just curious as too how much of a problem this is. Any information is appreciated. Thank you. |

A lot of time this is not a leak at all. Chain lube is usually the problem. It leaks out of the front sprocket cover and near the shifter shaft.

That is good to know, thanks. I probably won't know for sure until I inspect/ride the bike, but it doesn't sound like a major issue. |

There is a thread here somewhere that has some pictures in it but I can't seem to find it. Still looking though.

If it is a shift shaft leak, though, I think it's a real PITA to replace that seal. Hope I'm wrong, but you may want to do some research on how easy/hard it is to do so, just in case. And if it is a shift shaft leak, look for other signs that the bike has been dropped or repaired on the left side. Good luck... I'm sure you'll be "testing" her bike a lot in those 3 years. |
