There's a preload so new gen. I've never looked at a pregen, but they shouldn't have that preload.

New-gen. Pre-gen's aren't preload adjustable (that ramp at the bottom with 5 different settings).

EDIT: Yup, what he said.

Actually, First-gens had adjustable preload too. The First-gens had a threaded adjuster rather than the ramp adjuster of the New-gen.

So to answer the question that appears to be a New-gen shock.

Learn something new every day! I could have sworn the pre-gens weren't adjustable front or rear, and heck, we even owned one. I didn't realize it was just the locking collar type, I guess I never played with it...

yup, but not all year of pregens.

I didn't know about the threaded collar on those years. does it make a difference or does it just make a crappy shock, crappier?

if better, is it perfect fit for later year pregens?

The First-gen shock is a drop in replacement for the Pre-gen. As far as I can tell it is the exact same unit with a preload adjuster.

Thanks for the pic. That will come in very handy in the future when people ask about shocks.

I've never seen the shocks laid out like that from the different gens.

The 08+ shock body looks to be a bit shorter but larger in diameter and the spring looks to be a bit shorter but I'm not sure if it is due to the position of the preload adjuster.

Craig, just comparing the 1988 thru 2007 and the 2008+ shocks. Do you know how they compare as far as spring rate and rebound dampening (term?) ? Also, on your pregen racing bikes have you kept the pregen shock or swapped it out for the 08+ shock? I am trying to get a racer's opinion on which shock is better my my pregen both for racing and for street riding.

Thanks in advance for your input Craig.
