It's absurd. I can't believe it got this far without more outcry. Where was the AMA a few months ago when this became known?

Are kids still allowed to ride in cars? I imagine the lead content in those puppies is pretty high too.

That is @#$%ing ridiculous. I'm sorry I don't have a more eloquent way of putting it. Maybe we're all supposed to be excessively inactive and partake in nice sports...like chess or golf. Though I'm sure there's some kind of danger involved with swinging a club that they'll ban that soon as well.

kids are more likley to chew on some lead tainted chess pieces than the rim of a dirtbike....

dirtbikes just got covered by a blanket rule. its stupid, but thats what happens. what really sucks is that we ride and race kids bikes! not to mention the example in Cycle News about not being able to buy a throttle tube for a KLR650 because its the same one used on a kx65 ("kids" dirtbike).

ALEX, First Dude and computer wiz of the forum. Could you put out an alert on this forum to those who have not responded to Broom`s link?.I certainly will e-mail the AMA and express my concern. Whoopie--The forum is going political (with only issues that affect motorcyclists)

From my mom's forum - it's been suspended for a year:
The CPSIA Manditory Testing & Certification Has Been Suspended for a Year

Good news!

Nope, it actually didn't help the powersports folks at all:

http://dealernewsblog.wordpress.com/...p-powersports/

Though the testing and certification was pushed back a year, those that sell products over the lead limit after the 2/10/09 deadline that passed a few days ago are still breaking the law.

Partial quote from that link:
Quote:
Here’s the situation, as explained to me by the CPSC today:

ALL PRODUCTS SOLD BY DEALERS INTENDED FOR CHILDREN 12 AND YOUNGER MUST COMPLY WITH THE 30 YEAR OLD LEAD PAINT STANDAND AND THE NEW TOTAL LEAD CONTENT LIMITS STARTING ON FEB. 10.

DEALERS ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO TEST, BUT THEY MUST ENSURE THAT THE PRODUCTS THEY SELL TO KIDS ARE SAFE AND IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE LAW.

In a nutshell, if a retailer has a product made for kids that does not meet the lead content rule, she will be breaking the law if she sells the product after Feb. 10, 2009. These products can include machines such as kid’s ATVs, dirt bikes, motorcycles, and snowmobiles, as well as collectible toy units, helmets, parts, garments and accessories.

Dealers are posting up on other boards saying they've had to pull all affected stock off the floor.

Signed!! How ridiculous. I've been informing all of my other non-biker friends and they have concluded that Congress is starting to push it a little bit in the liberties they take on our behalf.

customer: excuse me but I am looking for a small dirt bike, the kind that kids use to ride.

Salesman: I'm sorry but we are unable to sell them to kids anymore, they have too much lead in them.

customer: but...but..I'm not buying it for my kids, I want it for me.

salesman: you are a bit big for those small bikes, don't you think?

customer: well........no.....I'm just learning, and when I fall over I don't want to fall very far. I might get hurt.

salesman: How do I know that you are just saying that to get around the law to get one for your kids.

customer: I give you my word....my word as a biker that I will not give it to any kid. (whispers under breath, I will only loan it to them

salesman: OK, lets go do the papers.
