Theft in College Towns?

I'm moving to San Marcos for school in a week, and I intend to take my Ninjette with me. However, I'm living in an apartment complex that caters to university students and I'm very concerned about my baby being stolen from me. Is this a big issue? Are there steps to take to deter thieves?

Any thief will be able to steal your bike if they really wanted it.

I would invest in comprehensive under your insurance policy if you don't already have it.

It's not to say someone won't steal it, but our pregens don't seem to be to be the most at risk motorcycles. They're not exactly money makers

I didn't think so... plus the plastics on mine are in pretty poor condition because the previous owner dropped her. But I'm paranoid about my stuff!

Know any friends who will have a garage? If not rent a storage unit.

doesn't matter of the condition on the outside lol they will most likely ruin it as they steal it and when it gone they will piece it out and sell it that way so there is no chance of getting it back.

You could use a Disc Brake Lock (with a reminder cord)

Or a big ass chain through the back wheel (I know, frame is better, but I don't see anywhere to attach it) and around something solid.

You could make a semi permanent anchor for it using concrete, rebar & an old oil drum if you can't install a permanent one. It won't look pretty but it'll do the job

I'm running into the same problem. I'm about to move into my new place at Kent and it will be a townhouse but there is a covered parking garage. So im going to pull my bike in sideways and park my car in front of it. I plan on lowering my deductible on comprehensive, and my father is giving me a really good rotor lock. Plus I'll throw a chain around the wheel/ frame and cover the bike when I'm going to be gone for a while. Comprehensive is the best way to protect your investment.

I can almost guarantee the bike will be messed with in an apartment complex in San Marcos. If not a thief, a drunk freshman.

For a motorcycle worth <3000, I wouldn't worry about the insurance. Get a disc lock, one with an alarm if you so choose, and a bike cover. You don't want to boost your insurance rate or whatever with a small claim due to vandalism/theft. That's my .02, but if you want to help the insurance company profit by purchasing unnecessary coverages, then go for it.

I would worry about that more if you parked by Frat Row.

My suggestion is looking into how much you school charges for a quarter/semester of parking, and just park in one of their garages. At my University parking over the summer was only like $25 for the whole quarter, and no one has bothered my bike.

Get the insurance. Its really not that much more for a 250r, and that way if something happens..you just go get another bike.

With no comprehensive...you're gonna eat $3000 everytime they steal it. And some dumb bike chain isnt going to stop them if they want it.

Personally, I'd go get comprehensive to cover whatever happens to it, and then get a two-way alarm from internatrix.com

Then you don't have to worry about it..

When I see a chain manufacturer offer to replace anything stolen while being protected by their product....THEN and only then will I consider them an option. Till then, they are just 20+lbs of metal that I don't need or want to lug around.

But it will cause them to spend more time at it & make more noise (hand tools don't go through this one, it'll take a while with a grinder or need a big hydraulic cutter)

Pro thieves don't like taking time & making noise in a public place, this should deter any amateurs & opportunistic scum.

You can't make anything unrob-able, you just have to make it a harder target than the next one.
(to prove a point, 2 ATMs pulled from walls to get at the cash inside.)

You know, the Ninjette isn't a heavy bike either. 2-3 average guys should be able to pick one up and carry it away.

It's nothing compared to joining a Frat, which one were you looking at? Try to pick one that won't sodomize you with a chicken

I'm not looking into frats at all, actually; someone just mentioned the comparative danger of parking my bike in a frat house area as opposed to in my apartment complex.
