...maintenance may have saved me

I decied to change my brake pads because I'm inticipating a track day. Right before I found something scary. Puddles of oil! AHHH. I investigated...I found oil on my pan, but no leaks there or from my valve cover, head, etc. Relieved, but, where was it coming from ?!? Then I thought...no...it can't be. So I poked it, and sure enough, my oil filter was incredibly loose. I'd say one or two more rides and it would have completely leaked everywhere, my tire included. SO GLAD I CAUGHT! Now why didn't I safety wire it in the first place. I took my 17mm socket and tightened it one full turn past hand tightened. Then I changed out my front pads and went out for a test ride, where I got to test them out because of a few deer!!! YIKES!

Very glad you caught that. Be careful about over-tightening parts though. Sometimes, that can cause more harm.

It still had more room to turn. I did one full turn past hand tightened.

last time I changed my oil I didn't tighten the filter enough, then I over tightened it and now I'm worried I won't be able to remove it without using the classic "stab the **** out of it with a flat head screwdriver for leverage because it's not like you're reusing it anyway"

I forgot to tighten my rear sets when I installed them. I checked them a few days later when I rode to work and discovered my error. I tightened them up immediately!

Screw driver method didn't work for me because I didn't have room for leverage.

Got it off with the locks almost instantly...also helps to wrap with duct tape so it doesn't slip.
