looking for earplugs
unless im going to the store down the street, i try to ride with earplugs... my hearing suffered quite a bit from loud music and the first few months of riding, so i've been using cheap disposable cvs brand plugs, but after going through so many i'm starting to think maybe i'm being wasteful... does anyone use reusable plugs? i've seen the fancy motogp guys use what look like reusable ones with cords.
can anyone make any recommendations? what do you like/dislike about the reusable ones? do they get nasty after a while? obviously you have to clean them, but do they only last a month or something? maybe they're those fancy swimmers plugs?

I've tried a few different brands and honestly, I seem to loose them (or one) before I wear them enough to need cleaned. I gave up and use the cheap roll em' up ones from department stores.

Personally I like the 3M disposables. The website inside the link should provide you a cheaper solution as long as you buy in bulk.

I got a custom pair molded at a gunshop in Chino. Although if you end up at the track, the org "TrackDaz" can now make some for you on the spot, I do believe
They make them out of medical grade silicone that cleans up super easy with soap and water, and it seems that they don't get that dirty that often anyways. I've been using the same pair pretty constantly for trackdays and any time I'm planning to go over 50 mph for over a year now, and they're still just as nice as when I got them. Although they offered free resealing if I need it down the line, so if they start to be less nice, then I'm still good. I'm too lazy to keep buying disposable plugs, and my custom set stores easily, so I always have them on me and never have an excuse not to wear any. Best $55 in gear I've ever spent. |

I like Howard Leight "Laser-Lite" plugs. The description
calls them single use, but I get 4 to 5 uses out of them before throwing them in the trash. Bought a case from a industrial safety supplier. http://www.howardleight.com/earplugs/laser-lite |

I use the cheap cvs 50 in the bottle ones, I need them to sleep in as well so they serve me well. I would loose a pair of 55 dollar ones in like 10 mins and still be back to my cvs ones so disposable for me. I need them for sleeping anyway so it works.

They're also incredibly comfortable to sleep in, which is nice in noisy hotels on the road.

Swimmer's plugs arent rated for noise protection. If you choose to use reusable ones (great idea btw) be sure to still keep some extra in jacket pockets and in the trunk. You never know when you or a friend might need an extra pair. One time I forgot to restock my jacket and lost the pair i was using. Boy did I regret not having them. It's not that noisy until you spoil yourself with earplugs and then loose them.

There are many different types of disposable ear plugs. All the comfortable ones I've ever used are Howard Leight. You can buy them in bulk through grainger or even amazon and save a fortune over buying 10 packs. The orange ones are firm without hurting your ears eventually like some of the cheaper ones. These for example, suck. (too stiff) The green ones are a bit softer. It's all personal preference really.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013A0C0Y http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RMFGGY http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007XJOLG If you keep your ears clean, even "disposable" earplugs can be used for a while. In fact if you use them properly in the ear canal, and often enough (daily) they will actually keep your ears clean. |

webBikeWorld has a great earplugs page, and extensive reviews. I highly recommend reading up there before you make decisions.
I use the Moldex Purafit 6800 disposables. Work great, comfortable, good for a few uses each, and you can get a 200 pack for $20 - only 10 cents a pair.
