12V cigarette lighter plug-REALLY basic DIY?

Okay, I've searched high and low, and although there are plenty of DIY's out there, they all assume that the reader has some basic knowledge of these things (i.e.: Step 1- connect the wires directly to the battery; Step 2- install an inline fuse......um, huh?). I do not possess such knowledge.

I do, however, have this:

and THESE:

(Incidently, I'm not sure what those wires are; they're just sort of laying there. My bike is a 2001; I've heard that gen Ninja has "accessory wires", but heck if I know if this is them)

So, anyone seen a VERY BASIC, created-for-a-six-year-old, idiot's guide-type DIY for hooking one of these up? OR.....maybe someone can take pity on me and create one? OR.....truly take pity on me and just come here and install it? Okay, that last may be a bit much to ask; I just want the gorram thing on my bike, and I don't feel like blowing my electrical system in the process, just because I'm a dumbass.

A little help?

Both those wires are 12 volt power sources that you can conect accessories to. Only the pre-gens have the ready to connect wires.

I put one of those in my bike to charge our phones while we are camping at MotoGP. I keep it loose in the tail of my bike. If you want it accessible you can make a mount in the fairing.

It's quite easy. Go to radio shack and get an in-line fuse, a couple of connectors, some extra wire and connection wrap.

Fuse:

(Not sure if this is the correct size. The ones I use say #12 1/4" stud. Make sure the battery bolt will fit through the hole.)

Wire:

(Get the same gauge as is on the outlet, should be about 18 gauge.)

(You need to cover your wire connections. You can substitute good ole' electrical tape but I prefer shrink tubing. It is much cleaner and more durable than tape.)

Solder:

(You need to solder you wire connections to keep them secure. You'll need to heat the wire to melt the solder. You can use a soldering iron, a small torch or even a cigarette lighter.

If you prefer not to use solder/shrink wrap you can use butt splice connectors. (Yeah I said "butt splice"

First: locate your socket where you want to mount it.

Next: attach your in-line fuse to the positive (red or white) wire.

(To solder wire together. Strip 1/4"-1/2" of insulation from the wire. Use a wire stripper or razor blade or sharp knife. Cut 1-2" of shrink tubing and slide it over one of the wires. Twist the two wire ends together. Heat the wire and apply the solder until it melts into the wires. (It is common for the solder to drip so don't do it over anything important.) Slide the heat tube over your connection and heat it. (Hair dryer or quickly moving a cigarette lighter over it until it shrinks.)

==>Alternatively you can use the butt splice

connectors. I'd recommend you get a crimping tool if you use these.

Next: attach a length of wire from the fuse to the battery positive terminal +.

Repeat: attach a length of wire from the negative (black) wire of socket to the negative - terminal of battery.

Next: attach connectors to the ends of your wires. (You should use a crimping tool but you should be able to get a good crimp with a pair of pliers.)

Finally: remove the two battery bolts (negative first). Attach the socket connectors and replace the battery bolts (negative last).

If you stop by my house I'll install it for you, for a small fee.

I just tried this with that EXACT same 12 volt acc. plug, AND the plug was bad right out of the packaging.....

I seem to have the exact same problem - same plug, and I can't believe it's a bad plug, but it does appear to be. Tried wiring it in the exact same way I had my gps hooked up and it just won't work.

Okay, I'm bumping this because I am beyond confused.

I bought the adapter (in the photo above), and I've connected it a couple different ways, trying to decide which is best. I settled on using the pigtail for my battery tender, permanently attached. I bought the same type of connector that's on the pigtail and crimped it onto the 12v adapter. When I plug in my 12v Slime tire pump, it works great. When I plug in my car charger for my phone, the little green light on it lights up, but it will NOT charge my phone. I thought maybe it was some sort of resistance issue with the connector I hooked up (boy, I almost sound like I know what I'm talking about, huh? Yeah...I don't. Moving on.....), so I removed it and touched the 12v adapter wires DIRECTLY to the battery, with the same result: little green light, yes....charging phone, NO.

I have now reached the end of my electrical knowledge, and I'm stumped (admittedly, this is no great feat). Does ANYONE have any ideas?

Did you try this with the engine running? Also, can you give us the output current and voltage of your car charger?

It should be written on the charger itself. I'm concerned that your charger may be overtaxing the electrical system on the bike, which may explain why your phone is not charging.

The only thing that I can think of is that the wires may be backwards. I'm sure you hooked the positive (+) wire from the adapter to the positive (+) wire leading to the battery and the negative (-) wire from the adapter to the negative (-) wire leading to the battery so this is just a wild guess on my part.

Since the motor on the slime tire pump will run foward (blowing) or backwards (sucking) a simple way to make sure you have the wires hooked up correctly is to plug in the pump and see if it sucks or blows. It's worth a try.

Okay well the car charger itself is no help....it only says "Input 12v". Zero clue about the output.

As far as Rick's advice: I will test that theory tomorrow. I will add, though, that the adapter packaging states which wire is pos (the gray) and which is neg (white). Even so, I did try it the other way 'round, just for giggles.....that time, the Slime pump came on (sucking or blowing, I don't know which), but the green light on the charger stayed dark.

It's for sure a mystery to me, and it doesn't make me happy, but I can at least run my tire pump if I have to.

That worries me right there. Does your car charger work when you put it into a car?

If you've got a charger that works with a regular outlet, there's something else we can try.

does the charger have an inline fuse somewhere? if so, how many amps is the fuse?

For a LED to light up current has to be flowing in the right direction the D being a diode (a diode is a two-terminal electronic component that conducts electric current in only one direction). Your tire pump probably has one of these also to prevent it running backwards. So the output appears to be good.

I have a powerlet cable, which comes with an extra adapter as some devices don't recognize the cable as a charging cable, your phone may be one of these special devices. Got any other devices you can plug in and try?

Well, I have a little auto vacuum cleaner (a Minimaid?

)....somewhere; I'll have to dig it out. I also have a doohickey that plugs in to a cigarette lighter and converts it to AC power; however, I don't know if that's safe to try. It's probably fine, I know, but we fear what we don't understand, and I definitely don't understand electrical stuff.

This problem is a mystery to me. The slime tire pump should draw more current than the phone charger so I am baffled as to what the problem could be. I wish I could be of further assistance but I'm not sure what else to test or try.

There is no way of knowing that your phone will not have the same issue but at least you will have no doubts about the connections and can easily instal and remove the power socket as needed.

Ok.. I'm trying to connect my GPS unit to a charger but I have no idea where to start and I have ZERO knowledge of electrical stuff so I went to the powerlet website hoping to find a magical outlet I could just hook up to the accessory wires and mount somewhere but when I search by vehicle the Ninja 250 is not there

Which one should I order?? Help please

MOTY - 2017, MOTM - Jan '19, Oct '16, May '14	Since the motor on the slime tire pump will run foward (blowing) or backwards (sucking) a simple way to make sure you have the wires hooked up correctly is to plug in the pump and see if it sucks or blows. It's worth a try.

Zero clue about the output. As far as Rick's advice: I will test that theory tomorrow. I will add, though, that the adapter packaging states which wire is pos (the gray) and which is neg (white). Even so, I did try it the other way 'round, just for giggles.....that time, the Slime pump came on (sucking or blowing, I don't know which), but the green light on the charger stayed dark. It's for sure a mystery to me, and it doesn't make me happy, but I can at least run my tire pump if I have to. PS- Yay Spaceballs! Posted via Mobile Device

I wish I could be of further assistance but I'm not sure what else to test or try.
