If you can remove the forks and drain/disassemble them before taking them to a shop it would be a lot less expensive than just bringing the cycle in and having them do the entire project.

Good God. If you go that far why not just grab the appropriate size socket and wack the new seals in?

if its easier than pulling out carbs, cleaning, and reinstalling them, then maybe I should suck it up and have a crack at it.

I didn't find it to be difficult. They're a little different from what I was used to, but this helped:

If you haven't purchased stacks yet, I'd recommend a different more effective design...

As with every type of manufacturing, you have to balance costs-of-production vs. performance-results. In this case, I believe they have compromised performance for ease-of-manufacturing.

For the effort, you can get decent performance. The bellmouth shape is most critical area of the stacks.

Angle of the tube also contributes tremendously and you'll want a 7-15 degree taper. Between 0-7 degrees is a no-mans-land with no benefits. The heyday of velocity stacks were in the 60s with GP Ferraris. For same amount of time and effort that you're going to expend, might as well get most out of it.

I suggest an elliptical bellmouth with at least 180-degree rollback and 10-15 degree taper. And made from stainless steel for much better heat-insulation than aluminium. I try to keep as much heat out of the intake-air as possible. You'll want bellmouth about 2x diameter of inlet.

Yep, gsxr 600 2006-07.

Looks like the hardest part of the conversion will be figuring how to prop up the bike.

Took off the back lenses and changed out a tail light. Not as bad as I'd feared it could be, one screw for the side plate and the lens came right out. Change the lamp, and the lens goes back in. I was pleased at how easily it fit back.

Then, of course, one has to take the bike out riding. The Snake in the late afternoon was lovely, almost deserted.

I pulled the 250 out of the storage shed where its been sitting unused for 3-4 years. It started to rain so tomorrow ill find out just how much work it needs before I can use it again. It needs a valve job for sure.

Hi Dennis, welcome to the board. Unfortunately it is almost sure to need the carburetors completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. The fuel tank will probably need to be cleaned out with something to remove the crud, if it looks bad inside. The petcock and fuel lines may have suffered too. I stored a motorcycle for a friend here in my climate controlled garage for about that long, and it needed all of the above to run properly again.

As TJ noted - carbs and fuel are going to be the first things that will need attention most likely.

I would expect it may need a "valve adjustment" (setting clearances between the valve and rocker) , but not a "valve job" (removing the head, valves, and grinding the valves and seats).

We bought a 2004 with 250 mi that had been sitting for over 8 years, and after carefully cleaning/adjusting the carbs, completely draining the tank and adding fresh gas, replacing the battery, and changing the oil/filter it fired right up.

250 miles!?!? it must have still had the little "hairs" on the tire tread. Lucky find - I don't want to know what you paid for it.

Ha - we have been lucky. That was my oldest son's first street bike. PO bought it new for his ex-girlfriend back in '04. She dropped it in the driveway from the looks of it (broken front signal) and never rode it again. We bought it in 2012, not running, with 250 mi and sold it last year.

We paid $750 for it (sorry...). Sold it for $2000 with about 5000 mi, but it had new tires and all maintenance (valve adjustment, carb sync, new fluids, etc) done and not a scratch on it.

Thanks, but my son did all the work and got the profit.

His second Ninja 250 project was a '90 that went down pretty hard (trashed the fairings) that he got for $150. Put tires on that as well, and did all the maintenance. Ran good - looked bad. Sold it last year for $850 after putting about 8000 mi on it.

The profits helped him buy a decent older VFR800.

Yeah was meaning to say valve adjustment, slip of the keyboard

Its going to be my first carb cleaning so that should interesting, and lengthy. Thankfully there are about a million how to videos and threads even on this forum on how to do it.

First track bike as well, so lots of new stuff for me to learn. Just wish I had a heated garage since its now pretty much winter here.

If you have trouble with the carbs or just don't have time to mess with them, Ducatiman here on the board is known for excellent full refurbishments at a reasonable price.

Beat me to it TJ.

Depending on their skill level, patience, attention to detail, and tools, some people prefer to have it done professionally.

If Gordon does your carbs you will get them back looking like new, properly adjusted, and bench tested.

Some of the info out there makes it sound easier than it really is to get it right.

I'm in Canada so shipping the carbs down to the states is basically a no go, although its awesome the option is available and by someone who knows the specific carbs. I'll try and bumble**** my way through my first carb cleaning. Thankfully i know a few folks who know small engine stuff if I get into a little too deep of water.

Worst case scenario, I gotta ebay another set of carbs and pay someone to fix those but I'm hoping it doesn't get to that.

Gotta try and save some cash, need some more parts since its a track bike now.

Hey Dennis,

I've purchased several eBay items from my Canadian brothers in the past and the Canadian/U.S. post seems to work very well. It's Australia and China that's the big pain in the tail feathers.
