I had a happy sports bike rider try to say something to me the other day ... dude, we've both got full face helmets on, 2 bikes purring away, I've got earplugs in, we're on an overpass with 8 lanes of 80 mph traffic rumbling below ... lost cause, my friend!!!

Way out here in the country, almost all riders wave, including when I'm riding a bicycle and wave to a Harley rider, etc..

I ALWAYS wave. If they don't wave back I have to go to my "snowflake" hiding place and take out my Playdough set. Years ago Harley riders would NEVER wave to a guy riding a "rice burner". Now, pretty much, everybody waves here in Michigan.

I usually give a little wave to other riders. Some wave back, some don't. I don't take it personally. Maybe they had their clutch pulled in. Maybe they needed both hands on the bars for something. Maybe they were focused on their riding and didn't have the extra mental energy to wave. Maybe they're new and haven't noticed that riders wave yet.

If they don't wave it doesn't necessarily mean they are a bad person.

There's a clever piece of code some people use to display your login name. Try logging out and then visiting the thread to see the difference.

I will wave if I see the other bike. But honestly riding in Washington DC traffic and looking out for all the cars trying to kill me, I don't see the other bike until it's too late. By the time I see the other bike waving at me and I react and get my hand up they are already past me.

Must be like riding in Boston. There they don't TRY to see you. It's worth it to see the U.S.S. Constitution though.

I wave to scooter riders, but only the ones wearing helmets because I know they are serious scooter riders.

Nobody waves at me when I'm riding my Z125. They just stare at me. I can see their helmets turn as I go by. They are probably thinking holy crap that guy is huge. Wait no, his bike is really small. And he's gone. WTF.

Around here everyone "waves." (Iowa) Mostly you just put your left hand down. If you are stopped you might raise your left hand fingers.

I did not know about this when, before I had a bike, I was trying out my son's Suzuki cruiser and other riders kept doing it to me!

It is a very friendly feeling. I like it--even though I don't think we all would be so friendly in person.

As you can see, I wear a hi-viz jacket and helmet, so I'm sure a lot of riders don't think I'm very cool, but they wave anyway. They or I may initiate it, but if they see me and aren't clutching they always wave back.

Around here, when motorcyclists meet face to face, we always say hello at least, and often start a conversation.

Actually, I think what I said came out weird. What you said would be true almost anywhere I think, including here. I would be just as inclined to at least say "hi" walking by another person carrying a helmet (since I would know they were a rider) as I am waving at them on the road.

I am not what many people think of as a typical biker; I have yet to find anyone NOT surprised to find I ride a motorcycle. When one college student of mine expressed such surprise, I said, "I'm not your typical biker; I'd like to have a bike so quiet I could ride up next to you and say, 'boo' and scare you."

As a non-biker "type," I guess I expect to be an outcast with biker types. I realize that most bikers (and people!) are nice guys even if they get a kick out of looking like rebels!--and, in fact, they are not prejudiced about me as I sounded like I am about them.

Sorry to get so philosophical.

I grew up in a small town in upstate New York, Penn Yan. It has a population of about 5,000 people. When you passed someone walking on the street everyone said "Hi". Move 90 miles North to Rochester, New York, population 208,000, say "Hi" to someone on the street and they look at you like you're a serial killer.

I say "Hi" to everyone and waive at fellow bikers on the road. I also say Merry Freakin' Christmas. It doesn't make me a bad person.

Sure, but that's only because every 7th person in Rochester *is* a serial killer.

Bah humbug!!

I sometimes wave to other non hoglie/cruisers riders. I do like to point at my helmet when meeting the uncovered fools. A lot of the time I'll wiggle my fingers or wave a foot but I don't like taking a hand off the bars. I'm totally sick of sideways peace signs from riders!

Funny (not funny) you should say that. An old friend of mine recently wrote me and said she was in a parking lot of Walmart in Rochester. She heard seven successive gun shots. Maybe Michigan ain't so bad.

Yeah, it used to be known as the biggest small town in America. Culture, beaches, TT Bearing, Wegmans. I could take you to Lyell Avenue and get you anything you want today. I hope The Dinosaur is still rockin'. Hit Nick Tahou's and have a "garbage plate" for me.

Yeah JB, when I used to get up to the DC suburbs (Bethesda, MD) I used to say hello to neighbors when I was out for a walk or run. Most of the time they'd be pretending to be interested in something in a different direction, but once I spoke to them they'd be forced to actually say hello back. It was fun to do.

The open hand waive will dislocate you're shoulder at 60 M.P.H.

Yup.
Just took bike for short ride. Raining and 40 degrees on the west side of the state. No one out to wave at today. Did get a couple of strange looks though!

In your avatar photo it looks like you don't have a front fender. Don't you get pretty soggy riding in the rain?

Very soggy and cold, didn't ride far, just enough to ease the pain.

I am currently reading Mark Barnes "Why We Ride." In the lecture about "Motorcycle Camping," he talks about how we divide into "us versus them" groups. (Road, track, dirt; HD, Asian; cruiser, sport bike, adv bike, dual sport; etc.) I don't think he mentioned Helmet vs not.

My earlier convoluted post about waving to those we might not befriend was about this, I guess. All of those divisions disappear and everyone waves where I ride.

I think that is because the divisions are largely personal, in our heads, but not in reality filled with any animosity. Speaking for myself anyway, I don't understand why people like things I don't, but we are all part of the motorcycle world and I like everyone feeling the connections more than the disconnects!

Many of you are too young to remember the old days. About 40 year ago you were looked upon as a real suicidal weirdo if you rode a motorcycle. Insurance companies very reluctantly provided insurance policies and financial institutions avoided you like the plague if you wanted a "motorcycle loan". Hence bikers were looked upon as the dregs of society. As Mrs. Clinton would say we were a "basket of deplorables". As a downcast faction of society we formed a psychological fraternity and that my children was the birth of "The Waive".

Do you get the impression that GEICO and Progressive insurance want our business today? Remember Honda's attempt to legitimize bikers with their ad slogan "You meet the nicest people on a Honda"?

Yup,odd

I too wonder how it came about. I just don't like having to wave at every bike I meet!
