different priorities might be one answer. different opportunities is typically the correct answer though.

I believe in hard work, giving up things that are not priority to make opportunities happen.

lots of people do. that doesn't mean you were presented with the same opportunities as everyone else. be humble and appreciate the things that brought you to where you are today. just saying "if you try hard you will be successful" is one of the dumbest things i've ever heard but its something that people perpetuate. trying hard in the wrong thing isn't going to get you ****. you could spend 16 hours a day training to be the best potato slicer but guess what, a $20 potato slicer is probably going to beat you every day. trying hard with the right things at the right time at the right place with the right people gets you success. some of that is hard work. a little bit is luck. where you were born or who you were born to. who you were around growing up. the friends you made and the connections opened because of that.

to over simplify personal wealth to simply "well i try hard" i think is a pretty big insult to everyone who busts their asses off working hard every day but still gets kicked in the nuts by life now and then.

if you dont believe in luck, let me ask you how much would it cost if a semitruck rear ended you at a stop light causing you to become a paraplegic? how would that effect your life? things happen. to belittle not only your own success as well as others success to just "try hard" is pretty ... uhh, well... cocky.

I am humble and appreciative of what I have.. that's why I still drive a 22 yr old car.
Take it however you want, I'm only stating what applies to me. You are assuming position that I did not claim.
Hypothetical situation you pose I think about it regularly, and I do my best to avoid stuff like that occurring to me.
Over two decades of riding bicycles and motorcycles, I've survived and appreciative of my ability to avoid danger and keep riding.

it's just odd. what you're posting in this thread... a thread about me buying a new car. you posting about how successful you are. and how you are so humble and its your hard work that got you where you are today and you've paid off half your house... and you're just so successful that you buy your vehicles outright.

HOLD UP GUYS...

If your priority in purchasing a car is to look cool, drive fast and entertain; then those are your priorities.

Personally, a car gets me from point A to point B with room to carry along large items without exposing myself to poor weather condition; most of the time we spend in a car is just going with traffic flow, not driving for entertainment.

If you consider owning cars out right and paying off half of a house is success, then that's what you think.
I consider success when everyone that work for me are happy when they leave work and no one is bleeding.
Again, like I said, different priorities.

I would think most would purchase a house around 30. That's if they feel they can settle down. I would probably put the age around 23 for most to be starting to completely concentrated on their career, since college is now an almost must, exceptions to this rule for those who are entrepreneurs or have a family business they can fall on.

Congrates, @alex.s, on the car. It is certainly a nice choice

I did not live in the same state for more then 4 years until I was 35. Buying a house ties you down.
Did you get someone pregnant? That would make you have different priorities. Choices depends on upbringing and opportunists to make those "decisions".

We live in a random world. Flip a coin ten to the trillionth times and you will get a run of a million tails in a row. You made your decisions because it was possible to make your decisions.

what does your business deal with? what state do you live in? whats the average cost for a house in your area? whats the average cost for a house within commuting range to your business? with those in mind how far do you commute? what's the minimum costs for a house in those areas?

perhaps you're not familiar with the costs associated with california.

let me guess your response: "so move somewhere cheaper" ... somewhere cheaper doesn't have the same tech centers and job opportunities for my line of work. so let me guess... "find a different job"

the problem is i love what i do. i love where i live. i love the things i have. my work is highly specialized so just jumping ship isn't as easy as when you are, say, simply a business manager with no real specialized skills. i'm also young. i have a fine savings but didn't want to blow the majority of it buying a car. i bought a new car because i am tired of dealing with break downs. i've repaired a blown clutch, blown first gear, blown head gasket, blown hydrualics, replaced electronics. the car lasted 160k miles and 12 years. i'd say that's pretty good. i'm tired of things breaking down so i opted to buy a cheap new car. yes 25k is cheap in this economy. you're right i could have gotten a total piece of **** that i would hate, and i would have saved maybe 5 grand. or i could have bought an unreliable piece of **** that would have had me in the same position as before. you're right, my priority in life is personal happiness and security. can i buy a house right now? i could if i wanted to be an idiot with my money. could i afford it easily if i lived in bum-**** nowhere? sure. but that's not going to happen. rent for a small apartment in this area is more than a mortgage for a reasonably sized house in somewhere like georgia or TN.

so get the stick out of your ass. peoples situations are different. and nobody gives a **** about your opinion on money. least of all me.

yeah. i'm annoyed by people who try to shove their opinion down other peoples throat without realizing the person doesn't give a **** about their opinion.

i did notice you didn't mention how much housing costs there. interesting isn't it.

Fact is that you wanted to know the real estate prices in my area and you are too lazy to look it up yourself, that's not an opinion..

speaking of luck and tragedy, my sister just called and told me a family member isn't expected to live past tomorrow. life is a ****ed up thing. if owning a house makes you happy, ****ing good for you. if buying a car makes me happy, ****ing good for me. who ****ing gives a **** dude. nobody cares. you need to learn when your opinion is valued. or maybe you just like annoying other people with your bullshit. let me tell you this straight:

i dont give a **** what your opinion is. so stop cluttering up this thread.

you said that's where you work. you also said you use the cheapest car you can on your commute. logic would follow that if you commute into brooklyn, that you dont live in brooklyn, ny.

i do like your little tirade of downvotes, though. 7! that really accomplished a lot. are you finished posting here yet?

I'm glad you like them.
I never said that I work in Brooklyn.
I never said that I use the cheapest car on my commute.
You assume those things because you don't read well.
I meant exactly what I typed, how you interpret what I typed is your opinion.

Seems to me you have very different priorities that's all.

Instead of spending time with your family, you choose to try and insult a person distance away that have zero impact in your real life.
You volunteer info about yourself & your family that are unnecessary and expect people with zero impact in your real life to understand your point of view with foul language that's not related to content of thread; then insist that you have poor luck?

Where the H. E. double toothpicks is IT?

Kinda makes it hard to know the price of housing in your neighborhood if we don't have your address.

Northern Virginia isn't real specific, but it can at least get you close to the price of houses in my neighborhood.

My condolences for you and your family.

Congrats on the car. I just changed the oil in my 2016 BRZ for the first time this weekend.

How are you liking the car so far?

Congrats on the car. I just changed the oil in my 2016 BRZ for the first time this weekend.

How are you liking the car so far?
thanks. and thanks.

i'm at about 1500 miles now. i'm gonna do the first oil change this coming weekend myself.

the car is amazing. it feels like a tough machine. let my brother flog on her while i sat passenger. (it's good therapy) he's a very experienced driver, drove Porsches for a long time. it was quite entertaining. he loved the car as well. said with the TC off it felt just like an 80s porsche but with less body roll and an easier to control rear end. (probably due to being front-engine) i have a lot of respect for what the car can do, though i'm not a very skilled driver. still, sliding the rear and doing donuts is insanely fun. saw a burz on the road the other day as i was turning so popped into sport and gave a little drift as i turned past. i dont think he liked it but i enjoyed myself.

the tires are **** though. need to get rid of the prius rubber. also it needs a subwoofer. can't get that bass with the stock setup. i know its early but i've got my eye on the edelbrock supercharger. 6 grand installed gets you an extra 100hp and they give you a 3 year warranty. too tempting. if you build the bottom and throw on the big pulley it'll go up to 500 hp, but you need to do basically everything else to the engine at that point to handle it. i'll probably wait until its done with the factory warranty though, and then do a full build for it. hopefully at that point i'll have plenty of track time on it so i wont crash it into a tree leaving a car meet.

i think i mentioned it before but i'm not a big fan of the transmission. sorta feels like they just took a light duty truck transmission and threw it on. the syncros aren't grippy enough and the flywheel is just too heavy. i normally don't like direct linkage due to the push and pull when on and off power, but the trans and engine in this car are mounted pretty solid, so its not really an issue. aside from being direct linkage, i like the gear selector. very crisp and clear when not dealing with 1st or 2nd.

the electric throttle takes a lot of getting used to. it's the first electric throttle i've used more than a short span and things like blipping and matching takes some getting used to. you really have to be a lot more aggressive with it since it gets so smoothed out. doing a down-shift blip for example, instead of just a little tap, you really have to mash it if you want to get it done quickly. and letting off the throttle again is smoothed and takes getting used to. you really have to be ahead of it to have the throttle where you want it when you want it. but i could see it being a massive help with mid corner throttle control.

there is really way more space than it seems like. i actually did fit in the rear seat for a drive with the girls without being too uncomfortable. and with the rear seats down, i can fit my bike in just fine. with the rear down and the front passenger down i can even fit really long big things. quite superb.

i'll be taking her to an scca solo2 (autocross) event in a couple weekends. my first 4-wheeled performance event. i'm actually quite nervous about it oddly enough. going with a couple coworkers. should be a lot of fun.

i do have some things i dont like. after a long drive sometimes at idle it will start ticking. not sure what the deal is. sounds almost like a valve lash adjuster isn't filling with oil, but when i youtube videos of the car, i often hear the same noises. so maybe thats just normal. i dont like it though. also when flogging on it hard in high rpm, it sounds like theres a pinging sound, almost like predet. but no warnings, and looking at the youtube vids, i hear the same thing in all them. so again, i guess thats just how it sounds. oh well.

wish i could have waited a couple months for the '17 refresh, but i just couldn't wait that long for a car.

The FR-S / BRZ are fun cars. When they first came out, Scion went around the country with 5 or 6 FR-S's and set up an autocross-ish course for people to drive on. I lived near KC at the time so I signed up to do a session and was pretty impressed with how the car handled. I almost bought one to replace my aging E36 M3 sedan but decided I wanted V8 noises in my life.

Have fun at the autocross! I bet that nervousness will go away pretty quickly once you get there and start meeting people.

Pretty spot on review. I'm also on the fence about a SC, I won't be racing or tracking the car in the near future but another +50hp or so would be nice.

www.ft86club.com is a pretty active forum that reminds me a bit of here, good people and a bunch of good tech.

When you do your oil change, swap out the diff and trans fluid as well. It helps a lot with the transmission.

Lol, the drive-by-wire throttle isn't ideal, but that's how it's going to be from here out.

There's a little lag, but once you get the timing committed to muscle memory, it's a non-issue. I assume it's the same as my tC, since they're both Toyota products and the FRS has many of the typical Toyota buttons and controls inside.

You've got a Toyobaru too? You should autocross it (or at least drop in for a free ride). Just bring your helmet. Sac SCCA runs at Stockton fairgrounds for the rest of the year.
