Not cranking - no headlights but I’ve got panel lights and brake lights
My daughter “borrowed” my 2008 Ninja while at school in AZ. She came home last Oct (2019) and left bike in storage til we rescued it in July (2020). Amazingly it started right up - hauled it back to VA, had carburetor rebuilt, oil change, new fork seals, new kickstand and chain lubed. Brought it home and ran it a couple of days... went to go drive it Monday and it won’t crank. All the lights on the panel come on but no headlights. Put the battery on the charger, ran through some quick diagnostics- tried to bypass starter switch with some alligator clips but still nothing.

To me the symptoms sound like the kill switch is engaged or there is an issue with it if the starter is ok.
If the kill switch is not engaged the started can be ruled out pretty easy. Just push start it. Get on an the bike, ignition on, pull the clutch and engage the first gear, choke in the position where you would normally have it when you start with a starter. Keep the clutch pulled in and ask someone to push the bike to get to a few miles per hour speed. Once the bike is going try to release the clutch. If the issue with the started the bike will start. Pull the clutch as soon as you hear the engine starting. Switch to neutral and let it warm up. You can even do it all by yourself on a slope where you can gain some speed. |

The one on the handle bar - the red switch you use to shut down the bike .

I do not have the schematics here with me but bypassing might actually activate it. Try to remove any bypasses , put it into the run position and try to pushstart. That would give you an idea whether its starter related or ignition related

Headlight does not turn ON until engine is running, so it’s working correctly.
If you hard-wired kill-switch to ON permanently, have you verified it’s working as intended? This test will verify proper kill-switch operation, bypassed or not. 1. With key ON, measure voltage at each coil’s red-wire terminal. What voltage do you get on each coil? Since kickstand was replaced, most likely kickstand switch wasn’t re-connected properly. 2. Unplug kickstand-switch connector from harness. Kickstand UP, measure resistance between 2-terminals of kickstand-switch connector (not harness side). How many ohms do you get? 3. Kickstand DOWN, measure resistance between 2-terminals of kickstand-switch connector. How many ohms do you get? 4. Key ON, trans in neutral, does neutral light on dash comes on? Steady with no flickering? |

So I cleaned up the contacts for the starter button and VOILA. It started!! Thanks for the pointers everyone...focusing on the kill switch/ starter button narrowed my focus - she lives!! Off for a ride!
